Harina By Monsees: Not Your Ordinary Dough!

$

I would always past by this artisan bakery and didn't really mind it until one day, I needed a place to chill and eat before doing some brotherly chores early in the morning.

It was a Friday, that I was really really early and had time to have breakfast. I had to wait for the release of my brother's report card in AHS.
Since I was in the neighborhood, I used my time and looked for a place to get my breakfast on. Thankfully, I followed my gut and tried Harina By Monsees. It was so good that I went on two straight mornings just to taste more of their offerings and get a vibe of their restaurant.

The bakery/restaurant is pretty much simple and deserted when I arrived but after an hour or two, the seats would get filled.
While waiting or choosing your orders, I would suggest to get some coffee (cafe latte-Php 130) or have an amazing cold drink like the Frozen Hot Chocolate (Php 180). This chocolatey drink is really worth it. The foam on top is somewhat consistent with melted marshmallows while the chocolate shake at the bottom isn't overly sweet and could make anyone remember their happy childhood days.
One of their specialties would be the Harina's Blooming Bread (Php 320)
Crusty Itallian Loaf filled with basil puree and an assortment of melted cheese. Served with a dip of balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil.
I could eat this baby all on my own! (and be bloated mind you! its good for 3-4 pax) The cheese and the hot and crunchy yet moist inside is definitely OMG!

The Breadfast Tart (Php 290) struck my curiosity.  It wasn't the usual thing that you would see in all day breakfast places.
Puff pastry shell filled with cream cheese, spinach, baked tomatoes, bacon and eggs.
The shell was flaky and the cream cheese was definitely present. It wasn't dry as the egg and the cream made it ow so yummy. Needless to say, I couldn't finish one so yes I got the half to go.

Hot Ham and Cheese (Php 220) was something you would definitely love if you hate dry sandwiches.

Flaky Pastry Filled with Canadian Ham, Gruyere and Pickles topped with Bechamel Sauce
I was expecting the bread to be dry and hard but wow. It was soft and absolutely went well with the sauce! It was so good that I wanted to wipe the plate clean. LOL!
and yes I love the Fries (Php 80) as I also ordered an extra serving. It wasn't too oily and I loved that they added a few herbs to transform the normal to something more unique. It should be a crime for ordering something this heavenly. I mean, they aren't the luxurious truffle fries but it can hold its own and for the price its a steal.

Please don't kill me.. but all the food here were ordered and eaten in a span of 2 consecutive breakfast.
Aside from all the sandwiches, I also got an order of pasta. When I saw the Boscaiola (Php 200) on the menu I was sold. Why? It had BACON!
Penne cooked al dente with a tomato cream sauce with porcini mushrooms and bacon.

Not yet enough? Yeah I thought so too so I got The Biscuit and Gravy (Php225). It rocked my would so it might do the same to yours.
Fried chicken fillet, bacon, baked tomatoes & biscuit topped with white gravy.
Where could you go wrong with chicken and bacon? And yes there is also gravy!!!! The gravy made everything awesome! The biscuit isn't your ordinary stuff. It was hard outside but soft inside. It really is a choice if you are going to love it or hate 'em but I liked it.

I guess for someone who is indecisive and doesn't know what to get, The Big Breakfast (Php 290) is your pick.
Create your own breakfast with a vegetable and cheese omelet, choice of Canadian Ham, Bacon or Breakfast Sausage and roasted pineapple. Served with toast.
I loved the omelet. It was gooey and cheesy plus the veggies filled everything inside. It was delicious.

After eating all of these, I noticed a familiar smell near the counter. It was freshly baked Spanish Bread.
Of course, I couldn't eat all of them but I did try one.
It was hot and soft. You would definitely know that it was perfect to pair with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. The filling wasn't too sweet and it was definitely a great and yummy breakfast treat.
Tip: although they open at 6am, the Spanish Bread is baked freshly everyday and goes out the kitchen around 8am.
I will be honest, I wasn't expecting much with this restaurant but after enjoying my breakfast with them, I would definitely be going back with my family once they arrived from their looooong vacation!  It may take sometime for the kitchen to get your order ready when you go there early in the morning but its worth the wait.
Please don't make the mistake of just passing by and not giving them a try. I didn't really know that this small restaurant is a breakfast gem. No need for road tripping all the way to Tagaytay just because of a breakfast crave (Breakfast at Antonio's). This is definitely a more affordable and nearer place for someone from north of the metro. Budget around 300-400Php. YUMMY!

PUSH PUSH PUSHHHH!!!! 👊👊👊 Cherry Blossoms!!!! 😖😖😖!!!! #excited#relaxation#needsomemore#tired#vacaymode #foodinthebaginkorea

A month or so back, I wanted to relax and booked a tour of South Korea.
So that I could be there for this:

Cherry Blossoms. Nuff Said

By the time you read this, I'll be on my way to the airport and hitching a ride.
Anyway, I don't know if I would be able to respond to any correspondence as I am not sure if the places I would be going to will have any internet access. I'll go international roaming for you but I don't know if my service provider has any unlimited data plan available for Korea. In any case, please do give me an e-mail at foodinthebagblog@gmail.com if you need to reach me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

So, see you when I do. Regular programming will be back next week. =)

"Where are we going to eat?" That is the problem everyone has be it on a date or a family outing.
Rather than saying, "Kahit Saan!" (Anywhere), why not try this

Last night,Open Rice had a media event to launch their App The OpenSnap. OpenSnap is the answer to that very question. Not only is this an easy way to access Openrice's database but it is somewhat like a food porn sharing application. To put it simply, its like instagram with links to their database of thousands of restaurants and reviews all over Asia and the Philippines.
The app is free and quick and easy to use.
Aside from that, you have access to almost all the restaurants in a loooot of Asian Countries. From, Hongkong, China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Also, if you have a previous account with Openrice, it automatically connects to it.

What I like about it, is that you could add different emoticons and filters.
Yeah, it needed some more artistic work.
 To something like this.
Just like instagram and other photo sharing apps, you could also add your friends.
So please, add me up: "jengjeng".

Enchanted Kingdom: Remembering How It Is To Be A Kid Again

"I am soooooo a kid!!!!" Thinking of being a kid again? Right? LOL!

Next best thing, Enchanted Kingdom! Granted that its a bit far from my place up north and that the last time I visited it was when I was being chased by zombies. This place puts the smile into everyone's face!

Anyway, Mama Bear invited Michy and I to try EK's new ride. The 7D Interactive Motion Theater.
The new ride is located somewhere in the vicinity of the rapids. Thankfully its enclosed and has a/c
For this ride, you got to pay 100Php a pop but for students, you get a d/c until 4pm
I won't spoil anything but the ride was awesome!!!!
You get to enjoy and play around with a gun!! Okay that is the most I could tell you! LOL!
Afterwards, you could ride a few of the best rides in the country.
Their epic roller coaster.
and the disk-o-magic.

and I must admit, I am an addict. I can't stop myself from parlor games and arcades as to which EK has a lot off!!!
like shooting these things off the table
and throwing these blocks off.
until I was able to win these.
and make me smile like a kid again!!!!
Definitely, Ek is a place for kids and kids at heart. It also make people get closer to one another.
A great family bonding experience. Just a note though, it was epicly hot! So I would suggest, going there on an off peak and off sunny day!!! LOL!
OMG OMG OMG!! Holding hands ang tamiiiiissss!!!!!!!! INSULIN STAT!!!

Thanks a lot mama bear!!! I had a grand time.. Maybe next time we could have more chika moment!!! :D :D

Red Onion: Your Unlimited Noodle Place!!!

$

"Dude if you're free for lunch, we will be at Red Onion" - Richie of Pickiest Eater In The World ...  and with that, I got off my butt and went to Up Town Center.

Huge dough!!!! What the heck, this block greeted my blogger friends and I as we entered the Red Onion cafe.
Not just that, but this robo chef showed us how they cut the noodles.
Cool right??!?!?! Awesome looking robo chef

Started the meal with some appetizers.
1st up was the Taiwanese Sausage (148Php).
Slices of pork sausage stuffed with subtle Taiwanese spices.
Not too sweet nor spicy just right to whet your appetite.

The Taiwanese Crispy Dumpling (198Php) is another that one must not miss trying out.
Half pan fried half boiled, both chewy and crunchy at the same time.
The skin wasn't that thick and it was soft. Plus it was a treat to get that crunchy base. The meat wasn't too heavy and just right.

And just like that without noticing, we started on our mains.

The Sichuan Mala Chicken (198/378Php) was one of those chicken made for rice!
The meat was perfectly cooked and moist. It wasn't that super hot but it does have that mild punch!
And for those that like it without any spice, the Green Onion Chicken (198/378Php) would be your bet.
This dish is refreshing and cool. You would think that just by looking at it, it was an ordinary boiled chicken but heck no! The sauce has all the flavors! Definitely another must try!
For all those healthy eaters, the Polonchay (Chinese Spinach@ 168Php) would be your pick.
Not really for me, but Ms. Irene and Sir Richard of Tales from the Tummy loved it so much.
But for those like me, get the Double Fried Sweet and Sour Pork (228Php)!!!!

The dish is simple and straightforward no veggies and just the pork! The coating was crunchy and awesome! It made me sweat as the taste was definitely spot on. Both sweet and sour at the same time, the meat inside was also tender! YUMMMMMY!!!! THIS IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OFF!!!

The Walnut Shrimps (388Php) is something a shrimp lover would really get!
If you are overly fed with tempura, this dish would give you a different take on shrimps. Covered with awesome coating, the walnuts gives it a texture like no other.

And for those noodle lovers you get to order the 39 Spices Beef Noodle (228/258Php). This baby makes everyone happy as you could get unlimited orders of noodles!!!!!!

The broth is made of champions! Definitely something one would slurpppp! The meat was tender and perfectly cooked. Now, when you order this, you get to choose. Either normal noodles or hand shaved ones. I suggest you try the normal noodles as the refill noodles are the hand shaved ones. From here, you get to get unlimited bowls of noodles. For me though, I loved the hand shaved ones as it is al dente and has that bite into it.

Since it is epicly hot, it was a welcome treat that Red Onion have a lot to offer to tone down the heat.
To start dessert, the Taiwanese Snow Ice (138Php) is awesome!
You get to pick what flavor you want! YEY!
As an  added treat for all those coffee lovers, they have this special kind of drink!!!!
The SPICED AND ICED COFFEE LATTE (128Php)
This doesn't disappoint. You get to have a glass of coffee cubes and a small flask of milk. You add a portion of milk into your glass and taste the flavor. What is awesome is that you get to taste the flavor and as you keep on drinking, the flavor becomes more deep. AWESOME!!!!!

I love how the dishes are affordable and definitely a treat! You would love to eat here even if you are not into spicy food as they have everything for everyone. You could budget around 300-500 per person.
And yes, I went back a couple of times already for some to-go loving and I loved it!!!

Sarsa: Damn Good Food

$

For a couple of weeks now, I usually see myself in the middle of the night driving to this quiet side of BGC to get a fix from McDonald's. (I know.. fastfood and its charms...of being open 24/7 )
During the wee hours of the night or early morning for breakfast, I get to roam around the place and see a couple of interesting restaurants. One of them is Sarsa.

Thanks a lot fax.. and yes... TWD rules!!!
You see, I won a shirt from Fox (wuhooo) and since I had to pick it up at BGC, I took it as a chance to have a lunch time date with my mom...yey! just the two of us.

It wasn't really scheduled and all but heck, we tried out this place.
Sarsa or sauces is a place where one could eat straight forward good old home cooking that could be the best of traditional Filipino and Negrense dishes. Nothing super fancy but delicious and definitely a  fun filled foodie experience.

Since it was a weekday, (I would suggest calling in ahead for reservations for weekends and dinner), my mom and I got a seat right away. Although the place is good for around 80-100 pax, it was almost full when we got there. We were damn lucky.

Got a table and these were present:
Achuete oil, Sinamak and Soy Sauce. Different sarsa to have a delicious meal ahead.

When I saw the menu I wanted to order everything just to taste authentic Negrense Food. Grabeeeeee!! Tulo laway mode on!

Started off with somethings to munch on. Crispy Dilis (110Php)
A different take on this usual dish. Pineapple based glazed with chili. Definitely HOT!!
and here comes Panit (170Php)
This is chicken skin my friends... YOLO!!!!
So.. you better taste its goodness and feel how it melts in your mouth! Damn good with the sauces!
Also tried the Isol (170Php) or chicken tail.
The juicy part of the chicken! Yummy!!! Right ratio of skin to meat.. 50-50!!!

Pritchon Pancake (220Php) is their take on the "peking duck wrap".
Although flavorful, the sauce was a little bit too much.
For veggies.. (yes we needed to balance the meal..LOL.)we had the roasted kalabasa with green beans and crispy dilis (175Php)
Back when I was a kid I could remember that I always eat kalabasa and it mushed and mixed with rice and I used to eat it every single day. Tasting this, I believe, I would and could eat this every single day! Promise! The fried tofu and the beans went well with the mashed kalabasa. It was infused with gata or coconut milk. Subtle yet it was there. Definitely delicious!

and here comes the heavy weights:

Sizzling kansi (bulalo 350Php)
Not your ordinary bulalo. The meat was tender and the sauce was epic!!! It wasn't the usual plain butter sauce. It had a different taste on it! Grabe bring me the rice...!!! But wait.. there is still one more dish...

The inasal sisig (320Php)
woah!!! straight up sisig made with chicken meat. The gracious staff even offered to mix it up for us but I refused since I had to take a photo of it. LOL! It was great! especially when mixed up with the sauces.. damn now bring me the rice!!

This rice is no ordinary rice. The ginamos fried rice (55Php) was not normal.
It wasn't too salty and works well with everything on the menu. Damn the saying of ordering plain rice to taste everything. This definitely would make the flavors come out and will make you eat with gusto...

Excellent food and service. The sauces made us eat a lot. Grabe! Totally worth going back too. Budget around 400-500Php per person. Why no chicken inasal in the review? Well, I got one for my bro but it was devoured when we got back home so I wasn't able to taste/take a pic of it. Hmmm negative side of the resto? That would be the parking. There is a limited space at the back. It seems the nearest area to park at would be at the Strip. oh.. and wouldn't you know, the lot beside the forum, is used as a drop off and pickup of helicopters. Cool right? ...

Epicurious: Curiousity Killed The Cat

I got curious so after the Spider Man Movie, my family and I tried this deli-resto place.
My heartbeat was racing when I saw all the goodies inside. From this and that to cheese,
 to meat,
to wines and what not.
This deli is also a restaurant in itself as you could order food from their offerings.
What you do is go up to their counters and order what you liked. From sandwiches
and other stuff...
to drinks and dessert.
Then you pay at the cashier.
While moving around and taking pictures, I accidentally bump a few glasses and Boom ..
They fell tumbling down. So just a note, be careful or better yet don't try take photos and back up for that perfect angle shot LOL!

I guess that is as much excitement that one could get that day!
For drinks, they offered a lot of no preservative juices and even some detox too.

The drinks were a bit expensive at 110-180 Php. Better to skip them instead and just go for water LOL!.
To start things up, you could order some salad.
My mom picked some fresh greens. The lettuce Italian Mix (200+30 for dressing Php)
This was the best dish we had during that light snack. Fresh and cool.
My brother had the spag meatballs (250Php).
I got to agree with my mom that this pasta was just ok. Just ordinary.
We also had the Trio Baby Pizza (280Php)
These were 3 different small sized finger foods if you asked me. Tasted too normal.
According to the girl at the counter, the Artisan Lasagna (250Php) was their best seller.
I got to disagree with her. The edges were dry and the taste has left me wanting.
Another sad dish that we got was the Baby Ham and Cheese Croissant (250Php)
The edges were burnt and the veggies seemed to be more than a day old. There wasn't that crunch that you would hear when touching a perfect croissant. These were soft to touch and as it seems old.

I was really excited when I read and saw the sign. They had an all meat sandwich. As expected, that is what I ordered. When I got the All Meat Sandwich (250Php). I had an expression of "WHAT?!"
One touch and I knew it. I was really disappointed. It was hard. I regret that I even took a bite and it confirmed my impression of it. You would see why.
I don't think that the name of this sandwich is appropriate. To describe it further, the insides were cold. It seemed they popped it in the heater for a couple of seconds and served it straight up.

Now that I think of it, the dishes they served were all prepared before hand and just reheated. I wish we should have went to a different restaurant where at these kind of prices, we would be assured that the food they would serve were freshly made and not just reheated.

Anyway, we asked for the sandwich to be exchanged but they returned one reheated with burnt meat. Hay... My brother tasted it and I couldn't forget his remarks. He said, the dressing tasted like those of a sandwich spread that could be bought in the super market and that it was dry.

I honestly hope that the food quality improves dramatically because I love the concept of having a deli that could be turned into a restaurant but if they continue this, I for one would not be returning. Even if they were the same group under Cravings, its really "a miss" at this time. Maybe give them some time to fine tune it. I must say though, that the service was all right and that the staff were somewhat helpful. Maybe they should be sure that the price is equivalent to the quality. And according to my mom, Santis has the same stuff but at a lesser price. Hopefully they improve their food service so as not to leave the customers with an odd taste in their palettes and their wallet.

P.S.
Now that I think of it, I don't remember the Potato Salad being served.
Maybe it was, but according to my mom and bro, it wasn't. hmmmmm...

Foodgasm IV: A Foodie Experience

Look ma... I have my blog on a poster.. LOL!
"Let's go".... and with those words, my friends and I found ourselves roaming Mercato Centrale and discovering the winner of Foodgasm IV.

A week or so ago, I was invited to be one of the judges of a food tasting event organized by UP Ecosoc (click).  I was pretty excited as it was one of those times that I am able to try doing something new. I mean it was not always I get to taste a number of dishes in a short period of time.
Because of the heavy traffic on Edsa, my friends and I arrived a little late. But no matter, it just made the experience more wild as there were a lot of participants and a lot of foodies roaming and tasting a lot of different sweets and savory delicacies.

Each one is given a score sheet. It serves as a checklist and as a score card for everyone. You get to rank each dish and vote for your preference.  tired from roaming around? They had bands playing and even some games to get everyone started. From food guessing games to eating contest, a lot of prices were given away. Well mostly, beer.

Although most of the offerings were sweets and pastries, there were some standouts that I enjoyed that night (and yes some of my picks were chosen as winners too).

1st one would be niku niku's crabstick. This year's winner of people choice award.
The team kept the presentation clean and always ready for the taking. My friends and I enjoyed this deep fried light snack.
The team behind the crabsticks.
Next up is the winner of the most innovative dish. Country Fries
Mixed with toppings that spell Japanese. From seaweeds to the mayo and cheese
I got to give it to their staff as they were perky when it comes to spreading the word about their product.

The expert's choice went to Ruby Red Kitchen. They actually had 2 entries so it was kinda cool that they delivered it well.

They had two varieties. One was savory and would go great with anything to dip with. While the other one was sweet and tasty.
They were pretty busy too :D
Of course, from all of the participants, there could only be one. The winner for this year's FOODGASM is
Hunger Buster's Dying Burger.

The burger were freshly made on site. It was kinda filling even if they served mini burgers.

Mushrooms, bacon, and cheese nothing could go wrong with that!

Pretty much hard work + dedication = win!!

And here's the winning team!!!

Of course, each of the participants deserve special mention, but I got to show you first how full my plate was:
My first plate:

2nd plate with still unfisinished stuff from the 1st wave.
Special mentions:  Pescado gourment tuyo made into pasta.
A little salty but great with chili to make it sppppicy hot!
Group behind the tuyo
and I saw some balls!!!

not just any balls but my kind of balls!!! LOL! These were pork hamonado flavored chorizo de Cebu. Sweet! Add some vinegar and you are good to go..but wait get some rice too!!!
sweet and cool longganisa like balls.
I also enjoyed Babci Kuchnia's Polish Pierogi. It was the most different dish I had that night.
These Polish Dumplings had caramelized onion, sour cream and bacon on top. Nice little snack.
Of course, I had a few more photos to share this awesome night.
Niku Niku: People's Choice
Most Innovative: Country Fries
Expert's Choice: Ruby Red Kitchen.
Other Participants:
Awesome Leche Flan!
Oreo Whoopie Cupcakes
Cuptain Cakes
Most ambitious: Baking Bad Bacon Cookies.
It was also nice to meet new and old blogger friends. It was great seeing Edel of The Kitchen Goddess Files, Ethel of Lifestyle Manila, Raffy of goautodial, and Ron of work at home.

Here is a photo list of  other participants and their entries (in no particular order) :

Quick Bites: Franks in Resort World Manila

When one craves good dogs, it doesn't hurt for it to be in a place that is open 24 hours.

Once you enter, you can really feel as if you are in a sports bar. One where you could relax and watch a game or two on the numerous LCD TVs on the wall.

They basically offer 4 kinds of dogs and meals that can pair it up with beer, soda and fries, wedges, and onion rings.

Although a bit expensive, you can get a voucher that would give you dogs at 25GP each.
Remember: Responsible gaming only!!!
Its basically a cafeteria styled place where the guy gets your order and assembles it up.
It could be a bit crowded as its a favorite with casino goers.
The dog was packed! It has a surprise between it and the bun. The fries had the right amount of crunch in them. Wonderful!!!
The dogs are awesome!!! One bite and I was hooked. The taste is wonderful and perfect. Although the most affordable one, the classic is still the best! Plain and simple! I love it.
They also offer some wings and nachos if you are up for it and beer for those semi-alcoholics. LOL!

Anyway, the pricing is a bit on the high end for dogs but if you're a frequent gamer and also a lover of all things long, juicy and awesome, you wouldn't mind shelling out a few bucks and getting these dogs!!!!

Check out Foodinthebag in Facebook. Like us at Foodinthebag.

P.S. As the location is such, only people of legal age can enter the casino.
I would suggest, you buy your dogs here and bring em up to the movie house.
Its a treat watching your favorite movie and munching on these dogs.

Because I wanted and needed to,I went to South Korea.

After the stressful stuff I had at work LOL!, I needed some time off. Thankfully, my mom and bro agreed to go with me to Korea. One thing to note though, one must apply for a visa for one to go there. Thankfully, the visa is free for a single entry tourist visit for any Filipino.
After fixing the paper works, filing for leave and taking care of stuff, we were able to go to the airport in record time. Don't forget, PAL flights usually takes off and lands in Terminal 2! You don't want going into the wrong terminal now. LOL! Sadly, our flight was delayed on the runway. We boarded on time but it seems we were stuck on the tarmac. I don't know why but there was a bee line of airplanes taking off. HAY!

Anyway, One thing I liked about PAL is that they offer food service and drinks.
On our way to Incheon , we were able to pick
Fish Fillet.
and Chicken Inasal

I love the inasal as the meat is flavorful and the sauce compliments it well.
And since we were going to SK, they offer a spicy sauce.
The sauce isn't really that hot but it gives a soft punch and helps start up your appetite.
The meal also comes with salad. A little too wet for me.
and I love that they serve dessert!!!!
I remembered when I was a kid and I went to Magnolia's Ice Cream Plant with my parents, and I got an unlimited amount of sugar rush!!! YEY!!! They were there for business while I was there for pleasure!
 YUM YUM!!
So Happy that my mouth was open wide!!!!
and of course unlimited coffee and tea :D

and once you arrive, you get off the terminal and walk a few meters and ride a train just to get to the customs and baggage area.

I liked how the baggage carrousel area was huge and clean and our stuff were there when we got to it..No waiting!!
Since we were on a tour, we realized that we didn't really need to exchange a huge amount of dollars. Although it would be best to note that 1000 Korean Won is 1$ and most establishments accept dollars.
After going around Seoul and some parts of South Korea
(I will be posting my adventures on future write ups).
It was time for us to go home.
Like Singapore, South Korea also offers to reimburse taxes paid by tourist. Whatever goods or merchandise you buy, you could ask the store for a tax refund.
Another thing for shoppers out there would be the duty free stores! They got a lot of those in Seoul. One thing you must remember is that if the product is not readily available in Korea, they have to ship it to the airport and you claim it there!!!!
Yep, you read that right. You claim the stuff you buy from duty free stores, in the airport.
A few stores away from your gate, you could be able to see an area where all the duty free distributes the goodies!

Get a number, present your passport and the voucher and you get the exact stuff you ordered.
They deliver it to claiming desks in the airport just before you get hoping to your plane.
On the plane, we were served dinner.
 braised beef or
Doesn't really look that good but it was okay.
sweet and sour pork.
From here, we were also given some Kimchi.
For a few days stay in Korea, I learned how the real Kimchi tasted like. Heck, I even learned and tried making one. I really enjoyed it. I just didn't like the bread they served. It was dry and hard as a rock.
For dessert, they also served ice cream.
A cheese cake flavored one. Yum yum!

and of course, our trip wouldn't be awesome if it weren't for 2 of the best people on the tour. Johnny and Kris. Kris is one super tour guide girl that know what a tourist wants. She has been doing this job for years. She tells you what is a good value buy and gives you tips in what to do and how to go about a particular situation. Johnny, on the other hand, is a student that is under a government program that allows them to make money as photographers on tours. He is her student photographer assistant.
Cool right? What a bright idea.

Because our flight got delayed, we weren't able to have a decent welcome dinner in Incheon.

The next best thing is, get some Fast Food. First stop McDonald's!!! Bwhahaha!
Just like my solo trip back in Singapore a year ago (click) and in Bangkok (click), the first place I wondered off to was McDonald's. Go Figure. LOL!

Almost everything in the menu was the same, so I picked something different.

So, what's in the bag?
I ordered some burgers and fries.

A take on a spicy chicken burger, their McSpicy Shanghai Burger is for hot bird lovers.
Crunchy chicken fillet and a few veggies on top.
I tried something different though. I had the double bulgogi burger.
Its basically, a double meat patty with a teriyaki like sweet sauce.
A little too sweet for me, though.
As expected, the Mcdo here is a bit expensive compared to what we have back in Manila. Take note that the fries and drinks all tastes and looks the same. Hmm makes me wonder, how do they do it? LOL!

More posts on my 2014 Seoul trip to follow.

ABE: Kapangpangan Loving.

Because a friend wanted to checkout a Filipino Resto worthy of bringing visitors from another country, we trooped to Abe.
We were greeted by a bar when we entered this resto on the 2nd floor of the Mall of Asia. It was facing the sunset and it had al fresco dining. If that wasn't enough, the other side is LJC's Cafe Adriatico.

My friend wanted to try out something refreshing so she had the Calamansi Juice (105Php)
It tasted something too commercial. One thing I would ask them for would be to serve drinks with coasters.
Since they opt to serve the food all at the same time, it took awhile for them to arrive. Hence the flood on the table.
Green Mango Salad (95Php). Sliced and served with Shrimp Paste or bagoong.
A specialty in Pamgpanga, would be rice cooked in a bamboo. The Bamboo Rice (250Php) was a beauty. Tidbits of different kinds of meat infused the rice with flavors that as one would say good enough to eat on its own.
The Crispy Pork Adobo (395Php) tricked me.
The outer part looks burnt and you would think the inside is as well. But when I cut it out, the meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned and it was soft and epic.

Since we didn't have any soup, we just had an order of Klasik Kare-Kare (595Php).
I guess the kare kare was okay. It was good for 2-3 persons.

Since I wanted to end the meal with a happy note, we opted for the Claude's Dream (130Php).
Its vanilla ice cream with macapuno or sweet coconut and some pandan flavored gelo. It was loved.

One thing that I don't remember writing about is that I am Half-Kapangpangan. Meaning to say, I was brought up with lots and lots of epic grandma style cooking so I am a bit choosy and picky when it comes to the stuff I eat especially if they are from Pampanga. If its great, awesome! If not I am not coming back. Since Abe is a Kapangpangan themed and owned restaurant, I had high hopes for it ever since.

Although I swore off not eating in Abe (long story= SERIOUSLY, bad service at their Trinoma branch and I had to apologize to my guests because of it and yes we ate our dessert at a different restaurant... that bad), years had passed and I tried them once again hoping that it would change.

Unfortunately, I am torn with how we were served. Good side would be that the food is awesome. I liked the way it tasted and cooked. Negative side were a bit too much to tip the balance. I had ordered something from the menu, yet it didn't arrive. I followed up and the wait staff didn't order it up, so I just cancelled it. Misunderstanding? Okay, Fine. The food came after a long wait. Understandable. It was kind of hard getting the attention of the wait staff before and during the meal. Although we came at a non-peak hour in the afternoon and the resto was around 50% full, I think the staff were acting like busy bodies (AIDS= as if doing something). These and more. Maybe, the only best way to taste Abe is to have the food as to go as I believe the food is great but the service is a let down. Sad. Did I mention the price? Budget around 900Php per person. Yes that much. I am willing to pay for it but as long as its worth it.

Chocolate Kiss: Sweet Pinoy Breakfast

I didn't study in this school but heck I have a lot of memories in it.

Ever since I was in grade school, my school bus ride would always pass by UP, going to and from my school in Katipunan. We would always see Bahay ng Alumni and at times have a snack or two in it just to let time slide.

One of the main restaurants that would forever be an institution in UP's Bahay ng Alumni would be Chocolate Kiss. I would remember how, my friends and I would troop to the 2nd floor just to have a snack or dinner then years later, they would open a ground floor branch, perfect for breakfast and quickies.

On a weekday morning, my friend and I went to the place. Surprisingly, there were already a bunch of people there waiting for the place to open. Not to mention, 15 minutes into our meal, the place was almost 80% full. Talk about popular and going strong.

She wanted to have juice. So, she got a freshly squeezed calamnsi juice (70Php).
The juice was really calamansi! It tasted fresh and asim (sour)!! LOL!
She also wanted to have a hot chocolate so she got the Tsokolate Eh (75Php)
YES THAT DEMANDING!
When I tasted her hot chocolate drink, I couldn't help but remember the same feeling I had when I first had a tablea (old school chocolate drink serve in the province). It was EPIC! I couldn't just let her have the drink, so I ordered one for myself too.

Yes, it was that good so I got another one for myself. Sorry mababaw lang ang kaligayahan ko :D
Mild yet totally tasted like old school chocolate.

She was in the mood for fish, so she got a Filipino Breakfast and chose Daing na Bangus. (185Php)
She was like wowed! The fish was whole and went great with the egg and the tomatoes and of course the rice.
I was indecisive so I got a Spanish Omelet (180Php).
Although the plating wasn't really that appetizing, I have to say that this omelet has the crunch and taste that definitely makes a guy wake up in the morning and eat breakfast.
Mushroom, ham, peppers, tomato, onions, black olives.

Chocolate Kiss is also known for some of its cakes. Since, it was her first time here, we got a Blueberry cheesecake (115Php).
It was just all right. Smooth and not that sweet.

With prices that are competitive and student friendly, you would be pleased with the quality of food they serve. Although for breakfast they have limited choices, one could be really happy with the stuff they give you. Believe it or not, 200 Php is already a lot per person. Yes I would definitely go back, but heck I need someone to wake me up early in the morning. LOL!

Best Western Premier Incheon Airport Hotel: Sleeping Here Tonight...

"It was a cold summer night" - yes the song...
That was what I was happily felt when I arrived in South Korea. ANG LAMIGGG!!!!
Since our flight was delayed and we arrived late, it was but fitting that we check in an airport hotel. Talk about foresight.
It was close to 10pm when we got in and the outside was deserted. Since this is Incheon, there aren't a lot of "night places" unlike Gangnam.

After getting our key card and the meal slips for our breakfast the next day, we went to our room.
I feel a little "stuffy" / init!!! (as what our guide warned us about) because the hotel is actually on heater mode and it was pretty warm. LOL

When we opened up the room, my reaction was hmmmmmmmm..

I guess they thought we wanted a special room or maybe the rooms they gave us was one of the biggest they have but I figured it was an easy access room. I believe it was designed for a disabled person as it had a ramp going in and the washroom's shower had no door.
Since we were too tired, we didn't mind it anymore. We thought what the heck it was only for a night. Less than 9 hours actually.
One thing that was kind of weird with what I saw with the SK's hotels was that the razors and the toothbrushes were all part of the mini bar. I know right. If in BKK, its condoms (click here for my stay in Novotel), here it was toothpaste and tooth brush.

Anyway, I tried to go around since I was still pumped up being in SK.
1 thing I liked about most of the hotels in SK is that either a convenience store is located within the hotel or its a stone throw away.
I wouldn't forget how the old couple in this store was happy and very welcoming especially when they learned that I came from the Philippines. They initially thought I was Singaporean lah.
Anyway past 11pm, and still pumped up. I looked into their free wifi!
A little unstable but heck the slowest speed is 3.43!! Wth!!!!and yes their wifi reaches the road. I tried.

Come morning, we had our breakfast at their lobby restaurant. Honestly, it was just okay. There were a lot of airline staff (read: HOT FA!) that was up and about but we went straight for the food.
A few cold cuts...
Fries for breakfast :D
Since it was too early, I skipped the kimchi. LOL
They got some fruits and salad... and wouldn't you know, those huge bananas are actually from the Philippines. LOL
nuggests and sausages
and they had a loooooot of coffee and some juices.
I just had some soup and a plate for breakfast... Yes you read that right... just one plate. LOL
Yeah... it didn't really tasted awesome but heck it was something to fill my tummy with LOL!!! I was actually saving for my epic food adventure later on the day....
One thing that I liked though is the rice they cooked. It was sticky and yummy. I would later experience that this is the way they really cook their rice.

For a short stay, it was pretty much okay. The bed wasn't really that great for me. The shower's floor was easily wet because there was no door. The breakfast food was average. BEST part thought was the free and fast wifi.. That I really loved! Also, they offer free shuttle to and from the airport. (less than 5 mins away...)
I guess everything was all right and off to my next adventure. LOL!

The Clubhouse at Magnolia

"I know I drag you guys into it but would it be fun for you if I paid for the meal?" and with that my Family happily went with me. Talk about motivation. LOL!

Somewhere hidden in a mall along Aurora, this small place, somewhat gives a chill factor. Okay, the name says it all. It's a clubhouse. The Clubhouse. In every sense of the word. I could see groups of friends, family and barkadas just chilling and enjoying each others company with a side of all day breakfast food.

For drinks, we tried out there carafe of Peach Iced Tea (170Php).
It was a bit too sweet but there was but a hint of Peach.

I wasn't really that impressed with their DIY Nachos (265Php)
The nachos were market bought and the dips were generic. I think my mom makes better nachos than this. I would suggest you skip this.

On the other hand, my family loved the salad I ordered. The Chicken and Grape Salad (295Php).
The grapes were fresh and the almonds gave that extra crunch. My only gripe was that the chicken used was somewhat similar to a chicken mayo salad. It was chunky and mayonaissey, for a lack of a better term.

I had the Pumpkin Soup (175Php).
It was not only pumpkin but also had some bacon in it. Needless to say, I love this because I love anything creamy... hmmmm creammyy.. Yes CREAMMMY.

Mom had their take on Eggs Bene. The Benny's Classic (395Php) was for me ordinary.
It lacks that oomph factor. One egg was a bit dry while the other was wet.
Dad being the overly simple guy that he is love his order of Triple Decker (325Php)
You get to choose between wheat and plain bread. The egg, cheese, ham and chicken breast worked hand in hand with each other as with any kind of a Club Sandwich.

My bro got something so not him. It was the Cheesy Chicken Parmigiana (295Php).
Although cheesy looking, the inside were a little dry. The outside stuff though helped to moist it up and the cheese really did its job.

Service was fast and quick. For an out of place restaurant (its between 2 different stores not food related), I was wowed because customers were filling up the place. I guess, it helped that it had an outside entrance and a mall one too. Budget around 400Php/person.

Making Kimchi and Chilling Like a King.

"What in the world is that?" I could remember uttering these words when my mom brought some kimchi home because some of her Korean friends made some for them. That was a few (a lot) years back and isn't it cool that I will be able to get my hand in it and try making one.

As part of the Korean Tour, our group was supposed to visit the sets of some of the Koreanobela but unfortunately they were under renovations. Instead, our tour guide Kris, changed it up with MAKING KIMCHI!!! .. Of course, I was game and so was everyone else and we totally grab the opportunity.

Kris, our tour guide, was exceptionally funny and warm. She made our trip awesome. This is the part where she introduces herself as one of the Kimchi masters. LOL! Sooo Kwela!!! To think she has been doing this job for more than 20 years!!! WOAH!

She explained the different ingredients and the stuff used to make the red paste. Which in turn, would be placed on the leafy vegetables.
Each one of us where given "the raw" ingredients and were asked to mixed it up.
You have to put the paste on each part of the leaves and also you got to wrap it all together.
Of course, they would sell the stuff we made.. JOKE!!! They make different kinds of kimchi. From radish to something else and they sell it. The ones we made were donated to the less fortunate.
Another awesome plus is that we were able to wear costumes. I mean, if we had Barongs here in the Philippines, they had Hanbok.
It was a chance for us to dress up and look uhm cool...
and yes look like a royal family too!!!
and that's how you pose!!! LOL!!!

Please don't ask me where.. hehehe its somewhere in Korea :D :D :D

Silk Road: The Path to Awesome Thai Food

I didn't know if I was lucky or not, heck, but to get together with these two really made my Sunday.
Richie of The Pickiest Eater and Cebu's Babe for Food, Justinne.

One Saturday, I received a text. It was from one of my awesome food blogger idol. It was an invite to try out Silk Road. Of course, I wouldn't say no!!!! Located in the BGC near St Luke's Hospital, Silk Road is inviting and it even has a 2nd level private area where one could hold power meetings or have a birthday party.

Once I entered the place, I could remember how I was transported back to
my trip to Bangkok (Click Here)
Anyway, enough of the memories... I wanted to make new ones. So my mouth was drooling as everything looks oh so delicious as I wanted to dig in STAT!! Mr. Pickiest Eater himself did the ordering for us so I know everything he picked passed his high standards!!Hehehe Peace!

The Crispy Catfish with mango salad (340Php) was crunchy and amazing.
The texture was close to Chicharon crunch. It wouldn't hurt to note that there were no extenders like flour placed in. Hence, the crunch. Chef Cecile, who just came from Boracay the day before, loved to explain each dish as she joined us during lunch. Her bubbly and fun attitude definitely shows in the way she let her dinners experience her cuisine.
Her Thai Ravioli (330Php) is freshly made steamed rice paper, sesame beef, shitake mushroom.
Once you take a bite, the flavor and the texture definitely explodes in your mouth. The beef is so soft and everything works awesome!!
Amazingly, her Pad Thai (340Php) is engulf in an egg-net like contraption! You don't see this everyday in Bangkok!!!
The flavor is strong and you get to play with them because there are added condiments specially for this noodle dish. It wasn't bland unlike other restaurants.
If you are up for fish, the Crispy Tilapia with Tamarind Puree (75Php/ 100gms) is your choice!!!
As rice lovers, we had the Silk Road Signature Rice (330php). It worked perfectly well with all the dishes. Duh! It's rice!!!
Speaking of rice, one must have them when trying out their curries.
We chose the Madame Green Chicken Curry (325Php). The staff informed us that this might be a little bit hot. Even asking it to be mild, the curry just might be a little too much.
Challenge accepted!!~ ala Barney...  LOL!
1st off, let me just say that the chicken were exceptionally cooked well. Soft and tender. The curry was spot on and yes it was epicly hot!!! So hot that it had me omgggggggggggging! hahahahaha.
For the main main main awesome course, we had the Siamese Pork Ribs (310Php).
The meat was fall off the bones. When I tried to pick up a piece, I saw how easily the meat fell off. Case and point! Damn!!!! It was a little sweet but definitely awesomeeeeeer!!! Dad would love this.

One dish that I always had during my BKK trip was the Sticky Rice with Mangoes (220Php)!!!
WOW!! Superr duper ... just one bite and I knew she had hit the spot. It tasted almost if not the same with the one I would get every meal. ANG SARAP!!!! I could eat one all for myself. Kaso nandian si Richie at si Justinne at si Chef  baka ma ban ako sa resto... LOL! (Translation: I had Richie, Justinne and Chef with me so behave mode...LOL!)

Honestly speaking and I kid you not, if you are into Thai food please please please I beg you to visit Silk Road. The food, the service and the personality behind it definitely shows. Chef Cecile is one awesome gal! Cheers for her accomplishments and all her future endeavors.

The price is really competitive and the quality and taste will make you happy!!! Budget around 400-500Php.
Definitely worth it!!!
Justinne and Chef Cecile....
Don't worry, this isn't the last time I would see Justinne...
Just wait for my Cebu Adventures!!! LOL!!!

Quickie: Korean Ginseng Chicken Soup

$

Chicken in a hot pot. How could it go wrong? .. With that, on a cold night in Seoul, our party of merry Filipino Tourists, were able to try one of Korea's famous dishes. The Korean Ginseng Chicken Soup.
We were led to the 3rd floor of a jam packed restaurant. From what I can see, the first 2 floors were filled with Koreans celebrating a wedding. I believe the dish we were about to partake on is some sort of "chicken soup for soul and body". LOL. According to our guide, the meal is eaten to help with cough, colds and would eventually make the body better. Especially since, there is a small ginseng root inside.

After waiting for a few minutes, we were served pipping hot pots of a small chicken, along with kimchi on the side. This was the Samgyetang or Chicken Broth with Korean Ginseng (14,000Won)
After letting the smoke subside, we were in awe as a small chicken is presented to each one of us.
We were instructed to cut it open. From here, we could see the small ginseng root and some sticky rice.
We were also given noodles to mix with the meal. Along with the kimchi, we were advised to mix in some soy sauce and other condiments to have the taste come to our liking.
and yes, we were instructed to eat the ginseng too.
Honestly speaking, I didn't know how to go about this particular dish. It was a bit bland for me even if I mixed in the condiments. Although the soup was hot and definitely warms our insides, I couldn't finish it. I think this particular "delicacy" is something I would be okay passing off the next time it is offered to me. Even though it is almost the same with Singapore's Chicken Rice (click here), I would definitely go for the latter anytime. For those who were asking, my mom enjoyed it. I guess she loves healthy and simple stuff. Yeps, she finished mine.

Lunch Box Diet: A Preview into " My Diet"

$

Eeeek! I was going to Cebu in a week! I thought I needed to tone down a little just to prepare for all the food tripping I had planned.. So hello Lunch Box Diet!!!!

I have tried giving this service a go a few months back but they didn't delivery to my house. Luckily, this time around, they now service my part of the metro. For the price of Php 1,700 or Php 340 a day, you get to have 3 meals and a snack to booth. Of course, they deliver this to your house. In case you are in the Tomas Morato area, you could also pick it up at their place just in case you want it earlier.
The first time I took a look into my goodie package, I was shocked! The amount of food was definitely something I could devour in a single seating. OMG!!! And to think it was already good for the entire day!!!

For  5 days a week, they deliver 1,200 Calorie meal diet per day. Ouchieee!!! The number means a little too much right? Well, you know a little perseverance and a little push it could work.
One unfortunate incident, just like in any food delivery service, your package might not get to you the way you want to. On a Wednesday morning, I saw two of my three meal containers were damaged. I messaged Lunch Box via Facebook with the attached pictures. They responded with the usual, they would look into it and has apologize for the incident. Afterwards, no feedback. So okay...
Since they didn't offer to replace it, well... I skipped eating those meals. LOL!!! Why? well there were some parts of the plastic container mixed with the food... so might be a tad dangerous if I still went with it right?
The rest of the week became more bearable. I guess its because your tummy would adjust and definitely mold into what you would need at the minimum. That and you just keep on drinking liquids to help you not think about HUNGER!!!!  It teaches you the right amount of food you could digest per meal. No over eating allowed!!!

Honestly speaking, having a try at this service is something one could do to at least tone down. The taste of the meals at first isn't that great but as time goes by, you get to savor them. Compliance really depends on the eater as with any diet. For all intents and purposes, this service really delivers on its promise as I find that I lost a few pounds on the first week. Although, they maybe just water and some unwanted stuff, you must always accompany diet with the right exercise and doctor's check up.

For the price and compared to other diet food services in the metro, this is worth a try.

Needless to say, I gained everything back with my Cebu Food tripping!!! Damn!

Livestock: Where You Pig Out!!!

Bacon Bacon Bacon ... Pork Pork Pork.. Enough said!!! I must have been circling the area  twice just to figure out that I am lost. Stupid me couldn't find the Livestock because a map I looked at over the internet (read: Zomato) placed the restaurant on the wrong side of the long Sgt. Esguerra Avenue. Argh. That and the GPS on my SUV can't work for its life... But on that steamy, hot and sweaty lunch time, I had one the most epic meals I had in a long time. Yeap..It was worth it.

What used to be a place where you would see JT Manukans and other grill restaurants, was now transformed into a compound where some up and coming restaurants are located. One building was solely dedicated to Livestock. The place famous for one thing. PIG!!!!!!!
I got an invite from Sir Richie of Pickiesteater like 11am and I know if its from him.. I would definitely say yes..Even if I was half asleep on my cozy bed and butt naked... but that's another story for another day LOL!

Along with awesome old school veteran food blogger friends (peace po!!!), we started the meal with something genius.
The Pig Wings (3pcs 320/ 5 pcs 440). Crispy bacon wrapped chicken wings in buffalo sauce.
At first, it looked to me as if they were huge shrimps. I was pleasantly surprised to figure out that its just chicken wrapped with bacon!!! YUMMY!
The Drunken Mussels (330Php)
I am not much into tahong or mussel so I just tasted the soup and it was lovely. The soup had a base of beer broth and of course some herbs.
As if to say, hey let's start with something a little bit different, we were served Seafood Laksa Soup (290Php.)
For someone who loves to get healthy at times, they got a Ceasar Salad (230Php).
Just move the bacon aka lechon kawali aside and you are good to go.. Personally though, I love the crunch it gives so no I won't be moving it aside. hahahaha!

They also offered their take on Pork Cheek Ragu (375Php).
The red wine sauce complemented the pasta very well.
To accompany the pasta, one also must have pizza. Wouldn't you know it that this particular place also serves pizza. We had the Adobo & Kesong Puti Pizza (395Php).
Quite weird combination but it really works.
Before the main events, the Mushroom Duxelle Fish Fillet (289Php) were presented to us.
Fillet of fish in lemon butter caper sauce then topped with mushroom duxelles. The topping of mushroom really works well!!! Yummy!

and now comes the big boys.

The first of whom is the Livestock Crackling Pork Belly
(300g 290Php 500g 490Php 1k 895Php.)
This epic of a piece of meat has a crunchy exterior skin and a flavorful meat inside.
The meat is soft and tender. The choice of sauces compliments it well.
In case you aren't a pork belly fan, well I know that you are a crispy pata person! You better be!!!
The Melts In Your Mouth Crispy Pata (590Php)
This baby is awesome!!! The fact that you could use a popsicle stick to crack this open is epic!
The flavor also doesn't disappoint. With the sauce and the meat you won't go wrong.
Just get a cup or two of plain rice and you are set!!!!

With livestock, in case you haven't seen the pattern yet, they try to incorporate everything with bacon!!! So you would definitely enjoy their Bacon Ice Cream Sandwich. (180Php)
It is their take on French Toast and ice cream but with bacon in it. Definitely yummy and it works!!!
Now for those health nuts, they also have the Salted Chocolate Fondue (210Php)

I love how the kiwi, banana and the mallows goes well with their chocolate dip mix. It was the right amount of texture and it was smooth and fine.

I enjoyed the meal too much that of course, we couldn't finish everything. It was also interesting to talk and dine and have fun with cool bloggers. (Mama bear of Sugargospice.com, Kathi of Mucking Around Manila, Len of The Mommist, Richie of The Pickiest Eater and of course his lovely Birthday Girl wifey Rina of Rina's Rainbow.)
