MARCO POLO MANILA: LUNG HIN Chinese Restaurant.

There's a Chinese Restaurant you must go to whenever you stay in the ORTIGAS area. That being MARCO POLO'S LUNG HIN.
Located on the 44th Floor, LUNG HIN has been in my foodie radar ever since it opened around a year ago. Foodies raved about the food. I never found myself going until now.
As you enter, you are greeted by the kind staff. Although not that big, the vibe is pretty much high end Chinese Cuisine.
You could opt for a booth overlooking the skyline or if you have a small party, you could reserve one of their small function rooms. These rooms could be connected with one another through a removable divider. They have a LCD TV and a couple have their own washroom. The price to reserve the place is around Php 15,000 consumable.I didn't know what to order so I asked the staff to order for me. HE then suggested these items:
BAKED Barbecue Pork Bun (220Php). It looks all too familiar. Similar to other Chinese Restaurants but there is something that sets it apart.
One touch and I realized how flaky it was. The fillings weren't too sweet. IT was savory. I liked it.
STEAMED SHRIMP DUMPLING with GOLD LEAF (220Php). I think the gold leaf was just placed there for special effect. It didn't have any flavor but let me tell you this though, these babies were huge. Compared to other HAKAW, these were plump. Real shrimps were used and there were no extenders. Each bite screams shriiiimp!
Another dish that I craved for is the STEAMED PORK SIOMAI with TRUFFLE SAUCE (220Php). The truffle flavor and smell wasn't a hint nor was it over flowing. It was actually well balanced. Truffle lovers would enjoy this because the pork blended well with the truffle.
SWEET and SOUR PORK with BLUE BERRIES (480Php). There was a distinct difference with the sweet and sour pork from LUNG HIN. With each bite you could feel the texture of the fried pork. The breading was done in a way that it will not crumble quickly even after being subjected to the sweet and sour sauce. The addition of the blue berries was something to give it a different flavor.
SALTED EGG SQUID (450Php). Surprisingly, the salted egg batter did its job perfectly. It was straight on. The flavor from the salted egg complimented the squid. A better version of calamares is you ask me.
FRIED MEAT DUMPLING (180Php). A few weeks back, I had access to the CONTINENTAL CLUB LOUNGE of MARCO POLO ORTIGAS, one of the cocktail dishes that were served that got my attention was this.
It wasn't too oily nor was it too rich. The coating was sticky rice with meat inside. It was a blend of sweet and savory. I like this one!
For dessert, I opted something different. The MASACHI BLACK SESAME DUMPLING (90Php/ea).
I actually can't describe the taste. Naturally, the filling is made of black sesame. It wasn't too sweet though but after one bite my dinner mate stole the rest. Apparently, she liked it pretty much.
LUNG HIN in MARCO POLO MANILA is an excellent restaurant that could actually stand on its own. Whether if they were in a hotel or a mall. Thankfully though, it is situated in one of the tallest buildings in the Ortigas Area. The view here is just amazing. Furthermore, the food is well done. The cooking techniques were executed well. Service was also spot on. Even if the prices are a bit steep for some, the quality of the food makes it worth it. Cheers.

EDSA SHANGRI-LA: STAYCATION over the Christmas Break

Because I wanted to relax for the KTG Christmas Party, I went on ahead and booked a room at EDSA SHANGRILA. All I wanted was to be prepared and not worry about going home late at night. I had the freedom to relax and enjoy.
It was that time of year again. Christmas. The Philippines has one of the longest Christmas Celebration in the world because it starts when the "ber" months kicks in. From buying gifts to putting up that Christmas Tree. As I entered the hotel, Edsa Shangri-la greeted me with this huge Christmas Tree in their lobby.
Because the lines at the check in counter was pretty long, I was fortunate enough to be accommodated in one of the Guest Relations desk found in the lobby. Juki was welcoming and had a warm smile when she processed my check in.

Something that you don't get to see everyday is that the process is paperless. According to JUKI, only Makati Shangri-la and Edsa Shangri-la have this way of checking in. A couple of signatures and you are good to go.
Since the deluxe garden room I booked wasn't available, I was billeted in EDSA SHANGRILA'S Tower Wing.
From what I gathered, it was the newly renovated wing. After exiting the elevators, the carpets weren't worn out and it seems that the walls had a fresh round of paint giving it a lighter atmosphere.

Hello 417. My room for the night.

After setting up my work station, I checked out what the room had to offer.

But I did took care of my tummy first with their welcome treat. A banana bread cake.
Everything that you would need to hang your clothes are in the closet.

The bathroom was pretty much normal. Generic toiletries from Shangrila.
I just didn't like it how the shower area was the same with the bath tub. Also, they did have hands free bidet so that's a plus.
Sleep quality was all right. The twin bed was just proportional. I was hoping that it would be a queen sized bed.

Since I couldn't really sleep just yet because of the amazing MAD FOR WAGYU BUFFET in HEAT, I went on over to their HEALTH CLUB.
The health club is basically two floors of awesomeness. The ground floor houses the locker and the wet floor area. It is open from 6am to 12midnight. It has a steam room, sauna and a jacuzzi.
The second floor is where all the fun starts. This operates 24/7.
 For those boxer enthusiasts.
And a lot of treadmills and bikes with cable tv in their monitors.
After a quick workout, I had a couple of chocolates which I brought from home. Perfect way to end the night.

Of course, they had a pool to service the chill needs of their patrons.
The pool can be crowded in the afternoon and night. I would suggest you go for a swim in the morning. They have a location that caters for the young ones and even have a deep end on the other side.
Since breakfast was part of the package, I had it in HEAT. HEAT is the in house all day buffet restaurant of EDSA SHANGRILA.

They basically serve everything for breakfast and more.

My first of many plates.
EDSA SHANGRILA HOTEL is an amazing property. It may be a bit old but its location is amazing. IT is like a tranquil paradise in the middle of the concrete jungle. Given that the price for a room is a little steep when compared to other 5 star hotels in the area, you could be sure of their service. For 7,800 Php nett, I had a twin room and breakfast for two in HEAT. Not bad. I would suggest that you look for deals outside of Edsa Shang's website as they could fetch you a discount. Cheers.
Thank you very much KTG for the awesome gifts :) Cheers.

CRYSTAL JADE BGC: NEW MENU for 2016

Crystal Jade in BGC has been the to go place for authentic Chinese Cuisine in BGC. Since it is the new year, the restaurant opted to bring in other Chinese dishes made popular by their other brand CRYSTAL JADE Shanghai delights in Greenhills. This made the menu of Crystal Jade BGC bigger and better. More choices for us foodies.
You could start off with some fruit shakes to cool off.
Began the meal with some Raddish Puffs.
Perfectly fried. No excess oil and the pastry tasted fresh.
Of course, the XIAO LONG BAO was also served. If you aren't familiar with it, I suggest you go out and try it. Basically, there is a soupy liquid inside the wrapper along with a meat dumpling depending on the flavor. It could be pork, crabs, and a lot more. Remember to eat it carefully as it would be peeping hot.
The beef balls were a revelations. Granted that it didn't look appetizing, one bite and I got hooked. It was smooth and the flavor was present. As such, I wasn't surprised that this dish was a best seller.
To the delight of many noodle dish fans, CRYSTAL JADE now serves SOUP NOODLE with DRIED SHRIMP and Peanut in Spicy Sauce. Commonly known as TAN TAN MIAN.  Surprisingly, the sauce wasn't as spicy as one would believe it was. The peanut flavor blended well with the soup. The noodles were firmed and the meat delicious. One bowl is actually big enough for 2-3 persons to share.
One can't get enough of the SWEET and SOUR PORK. The pork was perfectly deep fried and the sauce wasn't overpowering. I liked it.
As with any Chinese Meal, the rice was served towards the end. Properly done and not too oily.
To end the meal, we had the Almond Jelly with Lychee. It wasn't too sweet as such I enjoyed it. Very refreshing.

Crystal Jade BGC is welcoming the New Year with a lot of additional items in its menu. I am pleasantly surprised that they could carry a lot and yet still serve quality and affordable Chinese Dishes in the BGC area. Cheers.

ROCK and SEOUL: BIBIMBAP BAR in SM NORTH

A few years back, I visited South Korea. I actually enjoyed the food. One of those memories that stayed with me was when I was able to try the BIBIMBAP. It is basically a mixture of different toppings from veggies to meat in a rice bowl.
Fast forward to today, the RELISH GROUP thought of bringing a home grown concept to the metro that basically screams affordable and delicious customizable BIBIMBAP. Hello ROCK and SEOUL.

ROCK and SEOUL in SM NORTH EDSA basically lures all the young ones and young at heart. Aside from serving different kinds of BIBIMBAP, the place screams rock and roll.
The usual Korean meal would start with BANCHAN or appetizers. From noodles, to a salad and even kimchi.
The most notable though was the CHICKEN. It was hot, crisp and surprisingly good.
ROCK and SEOUL prides themselves as a place that serves a variety of BIBIMBAP. The original is their best seller. Different veggies accompanied by meat and of course egg.
I took a different route and tried the AMERICAN version. It was composed of a couple of burger patties, bacons and some potatoes. Take note of the huge chunk of butter on top of the egg. It is not your usual butter. It is kimchi butter made in house.
Aside from these, ROCK and SEOUL also offers other varieties like a Mexican, Shawarma and even Pork Salpicao version. They made it more international  since they touched the flavours from different countries. Be careful when you visit though, their plate is really hot.

NEW YEAR PARTY in HOTEL JEN MANILA

$

Since my mom and brother were staying abroad for the holidays, my dad and I figured that we should have a staycation instead of the usual fireworks and late night shindigs at home. Since I wanted my dad to experience something different, we opted to book a room at HOTEL JEN MANILA.

HOTEL JEN MANILA is located across CCP and is along Roxas Boulevard. It was the old Holiday Inn that transformed into Trader's and is now Hotel Jen under the Shangri-la Group.
We figured that since we were there for New Year's, we bought a couple of tickets to their Countdown Party.
After checking in and settling down, this was the view out of of the window.
Since the party doesn't start till late, I went and opted for a quick snack. Although pricey at around 150Php, the oats with fruits was pretty good. It was refreshing.
At around 10pm, my dad and I went upstairs to the 19th floor club lounge to join the party.

Everything was taken cared of. There was even a dance floor. All the guests had individual tables and chairs assigned to them so it was really organized.
Drinks were unlimited from local beers to juices and soft drinks. I went around though and checked out the food.

I enjoyed these salmon mousse. Pretty good. Neutral and not too heavy.
Fruits and salads were abundant.
The mango and shrimp salad was pretty good too.

Japanese rolls were also present.

Aside from the hor d'oeuvres and finger food. They also had a bunch of viands that would stand in a meal. Desserts were also present. From different short cakes to fruits.
A few minutes before the stroke of midnight, champagne flutes were distributed and the count down commenced.
IT was awesome. The DJ really knew how to play and had the party going. People went on the dance floor and danced and then BOOM!!! Happy New Year!
And that was my New Year's Eve experience. I shared it with my dad, who actually enjoyed it. It was his first time to actually have a staycation experience as he usually stays in hotels for out of town business. Anyway, I hope 2016 brings more luck, blessings, good health, and love to everyone. Cheers!

THE BIG CHEESE PIZZA: A Pizza Place in the Banawe Area.

It has been a long time since I've been to the Banawe Area of Quezon City. I actually don't know what's new there. I went for something that's pretty near Quezon Ave. Since it rarely happens, a new homegrown pizza concept was born there and as such, I thought it would be nice to check it out.
THE BIG CHEESE PIZZA is a breath of fresh air for the pizza community.

Located on the 2nd floor of a building along D. TUAZON, The BIG CHEESE PIZZA is clean, upfront and simple.
Fresh ingredients and perfectly made doughs brings up the character of The Big Cheese Pizza. I can't wait to try it out.
To start things off, the GARLIC PARMESAN FRIES (150Php) was served. Definitely not your ordinary fries. I found myself taking one after the other. The Garlic and the parmesan worked well with one another. SARAP!
The BIG CHEESE PIZZA is something that also prides itself with pasta.

It's basically a passion project for the owners. The wife loves cooking pasta while the husband the pizza.
The first pasta placed on the table is the MEATBALL (180Php). Three gorgeous meatballs topped the pasta. If you are a fan of red sauce, this is your bet.

CARBONARA (170Php) was also on the menu. It was all right. I would have liked it to be more creamier though.
BUT the pasta dish that I really enjoyed was the PUTTANESCA (150Php). Tomato sauce and capers were just perfect. It wasn't too spicy and the flavors jelled well.
Something that isn't on the menu yet (until next week) is this amazinggggggg HERB CRUSTED CHICKEN. This was pretty awesome! The meat was moist and herb mix was perfect! The sauce is pretty much sweet. One tip though is to pick the garlic mayo from the fries and use it here.
Of course this is a pizza place. The BIG CHEESE PIZZA PLACE offers 12 or 16 inches pizza perfect to share. This time around, I was able to taste three different pizza flavors. The first one being their 10 CHEESE OVERLOAD (430/590Php). 10 different cheeses placed on top a semi-thin crust. The flavor actually worked. It wasn't overwhelming that you will stop with a couple of bite. It was actually pretty neutral for me. The crust is soft and somewhat chewy. It isn't too thin nor is it too thick.
A safe choice is the ALL IN SUPREME (520/690Php). All the different toppings placed on the pizza. If you can't pick, this one is for you.
Another thing not on the menu and arguable my favorite is the BACON, CHEESE and CHICKEN PIZZA. No real name yet but basically this is my favorite. Did I say favorite? It had a sweet and tangy flavor. Kids would love its sweetness.

THE Birth of THE BIG CHEESE PIZZA is a welcome treat. Prices aren't too overloaded that it would make you cringe. Quality and taste wise, it is pretty good. The FRIES, CHICKEN and the CHICKEN-BACON PIZZA are the must tries! Definitely GOOD!
New restaurants opening in the BANAWE Area is definitely a must and I can't wait to go back and do a mini foodtrip. Cheers.

MARCO POLO MANILA: The In Depth Staycation Guide.

$
0
0

I would like to think that the MARCO POLO HOTEL in MANILA as a home away from home. I had the pleasure of staying in MARCO POLO ORTIGAS for a few days last month. I had free time but I couldn't leave town and I figured a staycation would be the best deal.
So I picked MARCO POLO MANILA.
MARCO POLO MANILA is located in ORTIGAS. 45 floors of awesomeness.
Since it was not my first time staying in MARCO POLO MANILA, I knew the drill. Hopefully, this article would help those that are new to it.

Once you enter the ground floor, you will be greeted by courteous guest officers. You are then advised to go to the 24th floor for check-in.

CHECK IN is done on the 24th floor at 3pm. That is where the real lobby is located. Check in could take awhile during peak hours. I would suggest that your companion wait in the CONNECT LOUNGE found directly in front of the front desk.
Parking is found at the back of the hotel. They also have valet which is 24/7. Although the valet service has a charge, the parking fee is free.
ELEVATORSmight be a little confusing at first but you will get the hang of it by the second day. For security purposes, they had it built so that you would need to change elevators on the 24th floor for check in or on the ground for parking and the top 2 floors for dining and clubbing. A key card is needed to access the different guest floors.
PRO TIP: There is this single elevator that has access to all the floors. From parking and all the way to the top. I usually use this to just go directly from my room to my car without having to change elevators.
As for rooms there are basically two types and would also depend on the location you would prefer.

THE ROOMS
To keep it simple, there are two types of rooms. The Twin and the King.
They are also divided also by their location. Either on the noisy METROWALK side or the quieter ORTIGAS SIDE. The charge is minimal and I would just suggest that you just go for a higher floor.
If you want something more upscale a Premier Suite would be your pick.
To get it out of the way, the suite is usually a corner room that has a bigger floor size.

The bathroom is bigger with a his and her sink and you have a long walk way to get to the bed. Also, there is a divider that you could close just for fun. Luckily, I was able to try this out last VALENTINE'S DAY in MARCO POLO (Click here to see).
Going back, the normal rooms aren't really normal. They are up to date and pretty on the eyes. New compared to other hotels in the area.
Bathroom configuration is basically the same with both king and twin typed rooms except that a KING has a see through window for you to watch the flat screen while tubbing.  Don't worry there is a screen you could pull down just in case you are shy.

As you can see here, a twin room may look a bit smaller since two Queen sized beds are placed in it. Another difference that I saw was that a twin room has a couple of comfy chairs compared to a day bed for a King Typed room.

Going back, the tub is separate from the shower and there is a speaker in the washroom. Pretty ideal set up. Built for comfort and with the guests in mind.
The toiletries are complete except that they don't give razors. They also have a bath salt that is perfect to scrub you down while in the tub. One thing I didn't like though is that they DO NOT have a bidet.
Entering the room, you have a couple of closet, with a lot of hangers and a flat iron for your suits.
The mini bar is complete with alcoholic drinks and even snacks. The best part of it is that they have a Nespresso Machine for your coffee addiction. In case you aren't into coffee, they have Dilmah tea too. Complimentary of course. Not the mini bar, but the coffee and tea.

They have a long table for your work needs. It also houses the in room safe.

If you look closely, there is a panel that has a lot of outlets and ports for you to charge your devices. If you forgot your cables, you could use the built in one on the telephone. I tried it and it works perfectly with my old ipad.

Their welcome fruits are usually if not always apples. Why is there a Philippine Airline December 2015 Mabuhay Magazine? Well one of my pictures got printed on it. YAY! #shamelessplug

The bed isn't too hard. It was just right. Perfect for a night's sleep. PRO TIP: No need to ask for an extra key to keep the room's ac on. They already left a permanent card there for you.

IN ROOM DINING
Who doesn't love room service? IN ROOM DINING in MARCO POLO is a 24/7 gastronomical delight.

A little bit expensive compared to eating in their restaurants or having a buffet down stairs. BUT, this is the ultimate treat. No need to dress up. Everything is prepared for you in room.

PRO TIP: Don't forget to remind them to bring up water. They usually ask how many would eat. Remind them to bring condiments such as ketchup or mustard. Sometimes, they would forget this. If in case you want ice, there is a bucket in the mini bar. For this, you should call the housekeeping and not the in room dining.

AMENITIES
Now, what makes a hotel different from all other places is their AMENITIES. Located on the 22nd floor, here you will find the pool, the spa and the gym. As you exit the elevators, you are greeted by the staff.

To your left would be the pathway leading to the indoor heated pool and jacuzzi.
To your right would be the gym. The bikes and the treadmills aren't as high end as other hotels but it serves its purpose. There are also some benches and other weights around. Electronically locked lockers are also located here for your personal belongings.

PRO TIP: After taking a quick swim, you may want to get a quick shower in their locker room. Also, the towels aren't allowed to be brought back to the room. So dry yourself properly before entering the elevators.
My favorite though would be the FLOW SPA. This is open from 9am to 12mn. Other than that, you could reserve a slot and have the massage in room.
I would suggest that you do it in the SPA. It has a two couple massage room and one for a single. The rooms has shower that can be converted into a steam room, a tub and of course a washroom.
Believe me when I say, that it's a bit expensive but the massage is luxurious and can really make you feel wonderful. I had mine in room at 12midnight to 1:30am. It was a joy and I slept like a baby.
CLUB LOUNGE ACCESS: The Continental Club
I have a love hate relationship with hotels and their club lounge service. Sometimes, it may be a hit or at other times, something totally unnecessary and expensive. At MARCO POLO MANILA, it is luxurious and totally worth it. Usually, it comes automatically with a club room or suite. BUT, you could avail of it from any room with an additional charge set in.

Located on the 44th Floor, The Continental Club is anything but the usual.

As you enter, you are floored with a view. A 180 degree view of the Cainta Area. All the way to Antipolo. Totally uninterrupted.

It's like a library with everything that you might need. Flat screen tv and even a long table to gather friends in and have a little meeting.

Access to the lounge gives you unlimited Coffee, tea, and drinks. If you are in a club floor room, you could do your check in here.
At 2:30pm to 5pm, you are treated to Tea Time. Afternoon snacks, from sandwiches to shortcakes and also juices and drinks.
Come 5:30pm to 7pm, COCKTAILS are served. This is basically your dinner. You could treat it as a mini buffet with all the essentials you would ever need.

Other than that, they have an extensive bar. From hard drinks to white and red wine and even Prosecco.
PRO TIP: Ask the staff to make you cocktails. My brother had 2 glasses of Prosecco, 2 double jack daniels, 2 double black label, a glass of bacardi on ice, a mojito, a shot of tequila, and a ginger ale.
This time around, the back area is opened and dishes upon dishes were served.
With the different days that I stayed and had access to the lounge, I was impressed as the main dishes are different from each day.
PRO TIP: If something is gone and or missing from the line and it seems forever for it to be replenished, ask the staff. They usually find ways and bring the dish to your table. Thanks Chef for the salmon!
They also have a make it yourself salad. The only thing missing here is RICE.
 CHEERS!
BREAKFAST is served from 6:30am to 10:30am. I would suggest that you pick a seat away from the window as it would get hot. Even if there are blinds rolled down, the sun's rays is a bit glaring.

For breakfast, they have a whole setup and then some. You could actually pick from this menu any additional things that you may want.

My go to would have to be the French Toast. This is something that I like and always order from their alternative menu.
Of course they had bacon. It would be madness if they didn't have any.

On my third visit, I brought my brother along for him to enjoy the staycation. Just a day's rest in our house and off he went to the hotel with me.
I think he went a little overboard with everything. If you think this is a lot, wait for it....
wait for it... this was our table.
I really enjoyed the smoked salmon. I think I must have had if for breakfast for almost a week.

The CONTINENTAL CLUB in MARCO POLO MANILA is definitely a must try. The staff is well trained and they know how to interact properly with the guests. They anticipate your needs and everything is amazing. PRO TIP: get there at 2:30pm for a late lunch, come back at 5:30pm for an early dinner. Believe me, you'll thank me.
IN HOUSE DINING
One thing that I am happy with MARCO POLO is that their F and B is amazing. I can not say this enough but the food they serve is awesome. Kudos to their F and B director and General Manager. They make it so that I keep on coming back for more.
CAFE PRONTO is the go to cafe place of the hotel. It is located on the ground floor and serves different sandwiches and pastries for the guests.

It opens at 7am and closes at 9pm.

Here, you could have a go with the different sandwiches, cakes and pastries to your heart's content.
Different freshly baked goodies are lined up for everyone to see. I believe come night time, they give out discount to customers that order the pastries and bread.
One morning, I headed down and tried out their sandwiches.
The ham sandwich was pretty solid. You are given a choice between different types of bread too. I was pleasantly surprised that it came with a seaweed salad and it was good too!

Amazing stuff! One thing I noticed about MARCO POLO is that their pastries are delicious unlike those coming from other hotels. Theirs is fresh and not too sweet.

CUCINA
If in case you would like to have a hearty breakfast, the CUCINA's breakfast buffet is for you.

CUCINA is the all day buffet restaurant of MARCO POLO MANILA. It opens at 6am for breakfast and closes around 10pm. I actually ate here a couple of times before and I realized that CUCINA isn't the biggest buffet around but it is concise and has everything that you would need. Not only that but, the food quality is impressive and I loved it! The last time I was there was for CUCINA's Flavour of Thailand feast (click here to check it out).

The breakfast buffet spread was pretty intense. An omelet station, breads on one side, all the protein and cards you would love on another. They even have a soup station and a Japanese station for all the rolls that you would want. Juices, coffee and tea are all there.

LUNG HIN
LUNG HIN is the Chinese in house Restaurant of MARCO POLO MANILA. Located on the 44th floor, it has stunning views of the city. It isn't big the place screams privacy and formal at every turn.

There are private booths along the window and they even have a few conference rooms that could accommodate around 10 people. These rooms have LCD TVs and some of them, their own bathroom. You could use them and reserve them but they have a consumable amount.

I actually visited LUNG HIN around four times in the past month so I could definitely tell you that the quality and the taste of the food is amazing. Albeit pricey, you definitely get what you pay for. A more in depth review on Lung Hin here (click here).

My favorites would be the HAKAW or shrimp dumpling, the TRUFFLED SIOMAI, and their sweet and sour pork. Simple yet done perfectly.

AT night there is one place to be at. That is VU'S .
The VU'S BAR is located on the top floor. Since it is on the 45th floor, you could definitely have an amazing time watching the stars and even looking down on the traffic below.
Open from 5pm to 2am except on Sunday (until 12mn), the VU'S BAR is the perfect date place. You could go for a table inside.

or pick between the two outside bars. One facing Ortigas while the other all the way to Antipolo.

Drinks are impressively priced. Very competitive with other high end bars in the metro.
PRO TIP: Go for the Ambroxia. It's currently the cocktail of the month. They also have happy hour with drinks priced lesser from 5-7pm.
THE FOOD is pretty good too. Not overly expensive, the tapas are delicious. Yes, you could also order rice.
All in all, I am definitely impressed with the MARCO POLO MANILA team. The service and dedication shows. Granted that there were misses on some front, but overall, I am happy with my stays in MARCO POLO. I suggest you follow their facebook page and check out their promos. I actually stayed last month for almost close to a week by paying only half. That big a savings. Thanks Marco Polo, and yes I will be back.

MINAMI SAKI: Japanese Resto in Ortigas. Plus a Giveaway.

I didn't know that there was a Japanese Restaurant as reliable as MINAMI SAKI in the Ortigas Area. Rather than the usual go to's, MINAMI SAKI by ASTORIA is the perfect way to go on a less popular but delicious path. Admittedly the restaurant serves fresh and simple dishes. As such, MINAMI SAKI should be one of your go to Japanese Restaurant in the area be it for lunch or dinner.
Located on the ground floor of The Astoria in The Ortigas Business District, it seems like any other ordinary restaurant until you enter. The Ambiance is perfect. It shouts Japanese yet is very private and well mannered about it.
Appetizers are served to whet the appetite. Shredded salmon meat with pickled veggies are placed on your plate first as a complimentary starter.
If you are tired with the usual miso soup, you could try out the DUBIN MUSHI. Basically a traditional seafood broth, this could pace your stomach just right for the meal ahead.
What is a Japanese Restaurant without fresh sashimi and sushi? Since, it may be hard to decide on which to pick, you could go for the MORIAWASE SASHIMI. Five different sashimi types placed in front of you. Perfectly cut and just plain fresh.
If you're looking for something different. The ABURI SUSHI might be for you.
ABURI means slightly burned. These were torched to give it a slight cooked and caramelized taste. My favorite among the 5 would be the eel. Sweet and luxurious. Other than that, there is tuna, salmon, hamachi, and lapu-lapu.
The chef knows how to please it's younger and picky customers by making the TEMPURA MAKI. This huge roll is just right for the kids and the kids at heart. Playing perfectly with the shrimp, it is rolled into a maki and is deep fried.
The Shrimp is proportional with the rice. It's not as if the rice was overwhelming. Rather, for a rice loving person such as myself, I enjoyed the balance. One bite meal I believe.
For something luxurious, the KAKI PAPAYA YAKI or Roasted Japanese Oysters on Papaya and miso sauce would be your bet. Oysters flown in from Japan are used to make each bite perfect. I didn't know that Papaya would work well with oysters and miso. After just one try, I got hooked.
For Steak lovers, they would enjoy the Teppan-Yaki. The US ANGUS SIRLOIN Steak is just flawless. The Meat is properly cooked to a medium or medium well doneness. You could say that it is healthy because it is accompanied by stir fry vegetables. Perfect with a mouthful of rice.

If that isn't enough you may want to try the USUYAKI STEAK with MUSHROOMS. Basically thin cut meat rolled with a variety of mushrooms inside. I could have just eaten this with rice and I would be all set.
For healthy eaters, the MAGURO PEPPER STEAK was made with them in mind. Maguro or tuna was seared and a sweet sauce placed on top. Simply delicious.
Another must try would be the SCALLOPS with TAMAGO SAUCE. The scallops were smooth and soft. Every bite would remind me of the sea. It worked well with the egg sauce.
Surprisingly, MINAMI SAKI by ASTORIA also has a well thought off dessert line up.
For something light, you could try their Cheese Cake.
The taste was pretty light, but I would have wanted it to be smoother.
For something sweeter and different, the WASABI CREME BRULEE might be your go to dessert. It wasn't that spicy nor was it that hot but the wasabi flavor was spot on and very distinct. It might be okay for some but it might not be for others.
If I was to have just one dessert, it would be the COFFEE JELLY. Aside from its smokey entrance, I was impressed with the taste of the jelly. Made with UCC Coffee, I was in love on my first bite.
MINAMI SAKI by ASTORIA is a great Japanese Restaurant to visit in the ORTIGAS Area. Under the helm of Chef Kimito Katagiri, I wasn't surprised with the flavor and quality of the dishes. He has an impressive career heading up different hotel restaurants in the Philippines for roughly 20 years. I was floored as all the dishes were superb. The prices are definitely proportional with the quality of the dishes.

CRYSTAL JADE BGC: CHINESE NEW YEAR MENU for 2016

Crystal Jade Dining In in Bonifacio Global City never fails to excite me. Chinese Food is done right and perfectly prepared. That is how I see Crystal Jade.
Back at my go to Chinese Restaurant in Bonifacio Global City, I was lucky enough to try out the new menu for the Chinese New Year 2016.
Since it was for the Chinese New Year, one very familiar traditional dish was served. The PROSPERITY TOSS SALAD. (YU SHENG)
It is prepared by the staff and he explains the different symbolism of each ingredient.
Then everybody gets a chopstick and tosses the ingredients up high while shouting LOH HEY for prosperity and good luck.
The Double Boiled Crab Claw with Superior Mushroom and Fresh Coconut was something unexpected.

I'm not really a fan of coconut but this soup made great use of the flavor and also the mushrooms. The flavors blended pretty well.

A huge surprise was the TREASURE POT. This Pen Cai is impressive. Meat upon meat of different origins were placed and cooked in a huge pot. This was a huge meal in itself. It is good for 6 hungry people or around 10 if you ask me.
What would a Chinese Restaurant be without the SUCKLING PIG? Crunchy skin and amazing meat. Partnered with jellyfish, this dish would make anyone happy.

I wasn't expecting much but with one bite, the CABBAGE WRAPPED with Sauteed Bamboo Shoot and Black Moss made me like it even if it was veggies. Black Moss isn't really flavorful but it absorbs whatever it is cooked with.
It actually tastes savory because of the sauce so I didn't mind it being a dish that is very vegetably.
As with any chinese meal, rice is served almost at the end. Just so that you get filled. Although it doesn't look much, this is the GOLDEN FRIED GLUTINOUS RICE with Crab meat and Salted Egg Yolk. This rice is a bit salty because of the egg but it worked perfectly with the different dishes.
To end the meal, FLOURISHING FORTUNE GLUTINOUS RICE CAKE were given to us. This is basically tikoy but pretty good. It was gone in a jiff. I actually ate a few because it was really good.

CHINESE NEW YEAR is just around the corner. Crystal Jade Dining In in Bonifacio Global City is an excellent choice of restaurant where you could celebrate with your love ones. Cheers!

CATCH in MAKATI: SEAFOOD and a Giveaway.

$

Going to a restaurant a little early before its opening time would allow you to check out the place before anyone else. At CATCH in MAKATI, I was able to do just that. Specializing in Fresh Seafood, CATCH opened just this January 2016. Located in the concrete jungle, I said yes to the invite because I was already in the area.
The call time was at 6pm which would normally be around 7pm by Philippine standards something I should take note of next time. We were seated on a table with sea shells as a design. Pretty and cool. Everything was simple and straight forward. That was my initial impression.
I actually didn't know what to expect. More so, I didn't know that this used to be LULU. Managed by the same guys behind Smith, Poulet Manille, Hooch, and Ebeneezer's , I had high expectations.
To start things off, a mix of ceviche were placed in front of us. Ceviche is usually fresh fish cooked in a vinegar or citrus juices that infuses its flavor in the fish's meat. It could be Mahi-Mahi or Norwegian King Salmon or Queen Scallops. Basically having the sea's flavor come out of the food.
Here, my top pick though would have to be the Kinilaw. Kinilaw is basically your Filipino Version of a ceviche.Their version had a more familiar taste like the ones they make in the province. Having a beautiful presentation also makes it an impressive dish.
Since as I mentioned, they also handle HOOCH, it would be foolish for you not to order one or two drinks from the bar.
They will also be coming up with a few more signature drinks in the coming weeks. Honestly, most of the drinks were a bit too strong for my taste but the flavor of the chocnut infused cocktail is pretty much solid.
Now let me talk about service. This could either make or break a restaurant. Whether it is a fast food chain or a fine dining one. I have to say, I was disappointed on how the staff handled it. Not the management mind you, they were pushing and asking us for whatever we needed and want but I guess the staff needed more training and time to improve, since they just opened a few weeks ago. I didn't want to make a big fuss about it but it seemed they had a few boo-boo's. Not once, not twice but three times. But, I have to give it to the owners as they tried to fix and make everything right and kept on checking up on us. Given that we were just invited guests, I didn't want to make it known but I guess it is one aspect that they could improve on.
Say for example the DUO of OYSTERS. Flown in from Caticlan and cultured by a French seafood specialist, one is baked with cheese and other served fresh. My seatmate had asked a particular server if this plate would be served individually. The server said that it was for sharing. Thinking so, my seatmate had said that we should just share it even if everyone in the group had a plate each. I just advised him to get the entire plate.
My other seatmate saw the fuzz and had asked for another plate for me. It did come after the next entree was served, but I decided to send it over to other ones that arrived late and were not able to try it. Not really something but looking back, I guess counter checking the number of orders versus the number of diners would be a great plus. Also, a simple count check would suffice.

According to my companions the BAKED SCALLOPS was to die for. Baked Queen Scallops in Japanese sauce was the most raved about dish the entire night. I can't really say what my opinion of it was because this was the second boo-boo. I didn't get one. I know I should have requested and advised the server about it but I didn't want to sound like someone asking for alms. That and I didn't know if they were going to serve more. In all honesty, it was an awkward situation. Things like this I really try to avoid.
The FRENCH MOULLE FRITES was definitely the dish of the night for me. After skipping the last two dishes, this made an impression. Imported mussels cooked in a creamy wine based sauce. If we had bread, the soupy sauce would be the perfect dip for it.
If you are into tempura, you may want to try their LOBSTER TEMPURA. It's basically a mix of shrimps and lobsters.
Cooked in a light batter, the lobster pieces are kept moist. Something the kids would enjoy.
A dish that was highly recommended was the LOBSTER PO BOI.
Lobster claws were placed in a bun baked by the kitchen. It had a crunch outside but was fluffy inside. Pretty good stuff. Different herbs and spices made it a little spicy but was pretty good. Also, the hand cut fries was solid.
The next boo-boo was when a friend of mine asked for a glass of red wine before the next dish was served. Since the SURF AND TURF was up next, red wine would be the ideal partner for the steak. The RIB EYE worked pretty well with the scallops and the shrimps. It was cooked medium and was well rested. Tender and delicious. Unfortunately, we had already finished the dish and the drink was no where in sight.
I was pleasantly surprised with the TURBOT. Air flown French seafood in lemon, capers, parsley, and other herbs. Apparently, this is a popular fish among the French. The mixed herbs blended well with the meat. This particular dish is actually by special request since they always almost get low on stock as a lot of diners request for this. Remember to try this and call in advance to reserve. It is pretty good.
To end the night, CHEESECAKE was served. Smooth, creamy and not too heavy.

Over-all experience is a great deal breaker for me. More than the flavors and the price tag, sometimes it is how we were served and the company that makes the night. It maybe because I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to other places that I have been to or maybe I was just off that night. But that is what I experienced and saw. In hindsight maybe I should have informed them of what happened right there and then but then again, I don't want to be known as the nitpicker of the group.
If you were in my shoes what would you have done?
Even with the mix ups, I'm not pushing or taking CATCH out of the food equation because the kitchen did a masterful job of creating seafood dishes that aren't usually seen in the Metro. Maybe a bit more training and familiarity with the menu would help the staff give the diners the perfect experience. Give them a couple of months and I believe they could do a great job. For now, best to go during the weekdays. Avoid peak and rush hour. Parking and traffic could be a problem too.

LI LI: Chinese New Year in New World Manila Bay Hotel

I was running late. I forgot to tell my driver not to pass by Quiapo as it was a Friday. I only woke up when we were in the mix already. I was actually pretty excited as I remember fondly of my Market Cafe experience in what used to be the Hyatt Hotel. That was back in 2013. It was an unforgettable experience. Market Cafe is pretty awesome and you could check it out here. After a rebranding, it turned into the NEW WORLD MANILA BAY HOTEL.

For this particular visit, I was treated to LI LI. This is the in house Chinese Restaurant of NEW WORLD MANILA BAY HOTEL. Once I stepped out of the elevator, I can't help but adore the different appointed booths and private function rooms for the diners.
Since Chinese New Year is coming up, LI LI wanted to let us try their Chinese New Year Menu. Different dishes that push prosperity and luck for everyone.
We first started out with the JAPANESE CONPOY SOUP with Abalone Shell and Seafood and bamboo pith. Just saying the name of the soup is a mouthful. And yet, I enjoyed how it warms up your tummy and makes your prepared for the feast ahead.
One of my favorite Chinese dishes is the SUCKLING PIG with JELLY FISH.
Accompanied by "pancakes", the skin was crispy and the meat was tender. With just a dab of hoisin sauce, and you are good to go.
The next dish is somewhat unusual for me. This is the BRAISED DRIED OYSTER with SEA MOSS.
The oysters were huge and had a savory flavor. The sea moss actually represents luck and prosperity. It absorbs the flavors in which it is cooked. Kinda like angel hair pasta if you ask me.
Another delectable dish would be the WOK-BAKED cod fillet glazed with honey pepper sauce. Accompanied by crunchy strips, the cod was masterfully cooked in a sweet peppery sauce that highlighted its flavor.
The Bouillon Scallop with shrimp mousse is not to be missed. The scallop flavor is evident in the ball like dish alongside with the mouse.
As with any Chinese Feast, rice is served towards the end of the meal. This is FRIED GLUTINOUS RICE with AIR-DRIED MEAT.
The rice is awesome. A little sticky and definitely flavorful. You will just hear your tummy be growling as this is a little heavy.
For dessert, we had some TIKOY and BUCHI. These are the PAN-Fried Glutinous rice cake with sesame balls. Delicious.
If that wasn't enough we had the famous CHILLED MANGO PUDDING.
Pudding on the bottom, fresh mango on top. With syrup and milk. Plus a crunchy delight. YUMMY!
If you are in the Malate area, LI LI at the NEW WORLD MANILA BAY HOTEL is something that will not let you down. For the Chinese New Year, you won't go wrong with any of these dishes. Simple and straight forward.

MACALLAN: RARE CASK Event in Black Bird, Makati.

I'm not really a drinker. Well, I was in a past life. Since an unfortunate incident left me on the side lines, I rarely get to enjoy alcohol until one night.THE MACALLAN RARE CASK Event.

The MACALLAN RARE CASK event was held in BLACK BIRD. If you aren't familiar, Black Bird is a restaurant located in the former airport tower found in Makati. The Nielson was renovated a year or so back to this grandiose restaurant and bar.

Even if I arrived a little bit past my bed time, I still found the MACALLAN an excellent drink.
This particular event showcased the different MACALLAN drinks but more importantly it was introducing the RARE CASK into the market.
Granted that this MACALLAN RARE CASK is a bit on the expensive side at around $500 a bottle more or less, it is still an incredible single malt. Made with distinction and luxurious flavors, the MACALLAN RARE CASK is something soothing and enjoyable. It has a smooth and exquisite taste. No wonder a lot has been clamoring for MACALLAN in the market.
Drinking it straight up or on the rocks is the way to go but for others mixing it into a cocktail makes it the perfect drink. For me, I did enjoy my Old Fashioned Made with MACALLAN that night. The citrus flavor matched well with the single malt whisky.
The night was young and with an amazing dj, it was just getting started. Alas, age is getting the best of me and I had to retire early. Cheers.

You can never go wrong with their HASH BROWN! One thing I also noticed is that IHOP has super affordable unlimited coffee. If you're a coffee junkie, this would be the perfect place to get your fix on. If you ask me, coffee, hash brown and pancakes sounds good to me.

KAFE BATWAN: New Menu for the New Year

$

One of the best Filipino Restaurants that I could recommend to my friends would be SARSA. Sarsa came from the genius mind and palate of CHEF JAYPS. Negranese cooking was perfectly done to enhance the flavor of Filipino dishes and lure people in. One of SARSA's sister brand is KAFE BATWAN.
KAFE BATWAN is located in the ROCKWELL area of MAKATI. Granted that it is Makati, I made an effort visiting KAFE BATWAN because of its incredible dishes and amazing chef.
This time around, I was excited and thrilled that I would be able to try out the new dishes from KAFE BATWAN for the New Year.
Things started off with the MONGGO TRIO (220Php). Green, black and red monggo with fried danggit and coconut milk. Honestly, I don't like monggo. I don't eat it. But, this dish totally changed that. NO JOKE. The danggit was salty and gave a flavor contrast to the monggo. The monggo was cooked in a way that the coconut milk enriched its flavor and deliberately made it malinamnam or tasty and savory. The pork in the middle is perfect to make us non vegetarians to love the dish even more.
Another revelation was the KAFE BATWAN LAING (250Php). Grilled coconut meat and pork rinds. This was an excellent dish. Well executed and perfect with rice. Did I mention they have a bunch of rice to partner their dishes with? If you are a rice eater such as I, please go for their GARLIC COCONUT RICE or the new DANGGIT FRIED RICE. Yeah, you'll love it here.
A staple of any Filipino Restaurant would be the sisig. KAFE BATWAN made theirs a little extreme. THE BRAINY PORK SISIG (440Php) with siracha sauce. Believe it or not, the sauce isn't too spicy so just mix it all in. The Sisig, on the other hand, has a little bit of crunch. The product of different parts of a pig. Don't ask what they are. Just know that they are so good.

The COCO JAM-MARINATED GRILLED LIEMPO with Batwan atchara (355Php) is something that works. Grilled Liempo could be a little salty but it worked with the coco jam. The sweetness melts into the meat and that makes it perfect.
The best dish for me though would be the NOSE TO TAIL KARE-KARE (500Php). Served with ginamos, this dish is somewhat a deconstructed KARE-KARE. The meat were grilled to give it a little burnt taste while the peanut sauce gives a little sweetness that is balanced through the ginamos' salty flavor.
For dessert, there is only two dishes that you must get. The SIZZLING BUDBUD (250Php) and the BRAZO CREPE (280Php)
The sizzling budbud (above) is somewhat similar to PUTO BUMBONG but on steriods. It in itself is not sweet but is sort of a sticky rice dish. With the addition of the ube butter and coco pandan coffee cream, the dish comes full circle. The other dessert to try is the BRAZO CREPE (below). It looks like a lame pacman creation but it is simple and straight forward. The rum cream sauce works and I swear by it. Delicious ending.
KAFE BATWAN in the ROCKWELL, MAKATI area is like a reincarnation of SARSA. Same feeling but on a different flavor and level. I believe that this restaurant is more adventurous. Menu is somewhat similar to SARSA but it has a different set of best sellers and a diverse take on Negranese cooking. I can say this proudly: When I am asked by my foreign friends and balikbayan relatives, this is one of those restaurants that I point them too. Yes, I am in love with SARSA and KAFE BATWAN.

VALENTINE'S at NIU by Vikings and a Quick VDAY Giveaway

Love is in the air as NIU by VIKINGS celebrate Valentine's day via the sweet route. NIU has partnered with LINDT to produce chocolate filled dishes to entice the senses. During a sneak peak, members of the media were treated to a chocolate infused course. From start to finish, everything was impressive.
The setting was romantic and different in a way. I must have entered the wrong restaurant, I thought, as the room was filled with candles, strawberries and even huge chocolate bars. Not just any normal chocolates but LINDT. In case you are not familiar, LINDT is a premium brand of chocolate that is used to make amazing backed goodies. For the Valentine's Weekend, NIU by VIKINGS has partnered up with LINDT to make chocolate inspired dishes just for its diners.
As this was dinner, unlimited wine both red and white were part of the list of alcoholic beverages. Perfect to start of that romantic feel.
Normally, a dull looking bread would be served to start a meal. BUT HERE IN NIU, things are a little different. This is the SPICED LINDOR PROSCIUTTO BREAD. The white coating is very light and it accompanies the meat filling. One must also give attention to the dip as it is made of LINDT chocolate. So good.
Surprisingly, this is partnered with NIU'S MINESTRONE. The soup is neither heavy nor light. It is something in the middle. Generally on the tomato flavor side, the soup has different flavor layering because of the vegetables found in it.
For the pasta dish, NIU concocted the MENAGE Au TRIOS or Household of Three. This is the Three-Mushroom and Spinach Cannelloni.
The wrapper is not too thick as it wraps the creamy truffled portobello, shitake and button mushrooms. Aside from these, there is also a spinach filling and is served on a bed on pomodoro sauce.
Up next is the slow-cooked PORK BELLY in Lindor Dark Chocolate BBQ Glaze. DAMN! The Pork Belly was so soft and tender. Surprisingly, the chocolate glaze on the side works well with the dish. I could actually lick the plate.
For Lamb lovers, they have the vegetable stacked PULLED Grass-Feb Lamb Leg in Lindor Port Wine. The lamb flavor was evident in this dish.
The wine blended with the chocolate sauce that it made it a little bit milder in terms of flavor profile.
As an interlude, more wine and alcoholic drinks were served. This cocktail is a little light and sparkling. Definitely a ladies' drink.
Another entree was the Spit-Roasted Chateubriand in Black Lindor Truffle Sauce. One whiff and the truffle smell was there. Chateaubriand is a thicker cut from the tenderloin fillet. The meal was cooked to a perfect medium. The meat absorbed the flavors from the truffle sauce.
To finish the night a LOVE TRIANGLE was created.
Lindor Ganache, Hazelnut Buttercream and Coffee diplomat filled cake. The insides of the cake was moist and wonderfully delicious. I believe it was because of the quality and the flavor profile of the LINDOR that made it amazing. Sorry Doc, I finished everything on this plate. Soooo Goood!

The partnership of NIU and LINDOR made this coming Valentine's celebration a tummy to remember. A lovely sweet treat is waiting for you at NIU. This menu would be added to both LUNCH and DINNER of NIU from February 13-16, 2016. I hope you get to try them.

SPECTRUM: SUNDAY BRUNCH at the RANCH

One foot in and you are transported to a different place. That is the feeling you get once you enter SPECTRUM. On that SUNDAY BRUNCH, SPECTRUM in FAIRMONT HOTEL, MAKATI was beautifully curated and designed to show off amazing detail pertaining to the over all theme of the BRUNCH. It was basically SUNDAY BRUNCH at the RANCH.
Since it was already past noon, I ordered a mojito to freshen up. Although not really part of the buffet, they offer different beers from Corona to Millers and even Margaritas and Tequila Shots. Deadly.
One might say that the buffet isn't as huge as other places. This might be true but the selection and the quality of the food choices are excellent and are above standard. You can make your own salad at one end.
Or pick different carbs at another.
Foie Gras and even other dips are present to make the perfect choices.
On one side, you could have your own pasta made. The Ravioli and the Cannelloni were pretty good.
A taco stand was right beside it. Basically a make your own dish. Pretty good if you are into it.
From here on out, you could say that I love everything. From the cheese and meat section.
To these hors d'oeuvres. Wanton wrapper with a strawberry like mouse on top or a tomato with cheese.
Freshness is one thing that SPECTRUM got right. They don't make large quantity of dishes from the start. Rather they just prepare and do them as the brunch goes along.
The home made smoked salmon was pretty good.
Different seafoods were also part of the buffet.
You could have them grilled or cooked to your liking or just get them off the rack like these crab claws or clams.
One would also appreciate their sushi bar. Different creative creations were made to make it more appealing to the taste buds.
Of course, they also have the standards.
Outside, there is a grill area for your tummy's content. Marinated chicken,
Steaks and lamb chops were present and cooked to your preference.
What is a brunch without the quintessential Filipino Dish. The lechon.
If these aren't enough, they have a row of cooked dishes to make you drool. Plus, turkey, prime ribs and other cuts of steak were there ready to be grilled for you. Chinese Dimsum were also aplenty.
The kids are very much welcome to this Sunday Brunch. They have a station all for themselves.
Right beside the play area, kid's favorite are served. From popcorn, fries and grilled corn.
One thing that I must say though is that SPECTRUM has the best DESSERT STATION in all of the buffets that I have visited. More often than not, buffets would not give a lot of attention to dessert. BUT at SPECTRUM'S... It is all worth the rave!
Right off the bat, you see this poking at you.
Baecon Macarons. Unlimited amounts of sugar goodness.
Different types of cakes were also presented. Each with different flavor profile and texture.
Interestingly enough, this one had candied bacon on top. Fret not though, you could ask and get one on the side.
Another revelation was the BAKLAVA. It was done masterfully. The chopped nuts worked well with the sweet pastry.

Just to show my plates:
I try to diet.
There are just those times that I couldn't.
And this is one of them.
Because all the dishes were excellent.

Hands down though, it has got to be the DESSERT that I really raved about. Damn candied bacon.
You would think that the SMORES would be something normal. BUT NO! They have a little dark chocolate secret in the center.
Priced at Php 2,777 per person, you could really say that it might lighten your pockets but then again, you get what you paid for. Excellent choices, high end quality and most of all great service. If you go, I suggest you bring a driver so that you could drink to your heart's content. If not, it's okay since they have valet service for you. The buffet was curated perfectly and gave off that wonderful feeling afterwards.... Food Coma.

SAGE BESPOKE GRILL at MAKATI SHANGRI-LA: Sustainable Food Week

Food is an important aspect of living. As with everything though, it is not limitless. Because of this, we need to be protective and always looking forward. This week, a lot of restaurants in Manila are celebrating the SUSTAINABLE FOOD WEEK. This teaches us to be more in tune with nature and protect it.

One such restaurant that is taking this seriously would be MAKATI SHANGRI-LA'S SAGE BESPOKE GRILL.

Located on the 2nd floor of the hotel, the SAGE BESPOKE GRILL took a page out of the MAD MEN TV SERIES. Leather seats, awesome ambiance and the perfect service.

Appetizers were served prior to the main sit down meal. This SISIG is made from the Matambaka fish or the Bigeye Scad. Interestingly enough, it didn't taste too fishy. It was just like chicken. Sustainability, I believe is having also to make do with what is available in the sea.
A TUNA crostini was served next. Nothing heavy and pretty light. I liked how with each bite, there is a crunch sound. Talk about fresh bread baked daily.
Kilawin or ceviche were also served. Fresh fish used and cooked with vinegar.
Just for this week, SAGE BESPOKE GRILL made an excellent lunch set menu that screams sustainability and freshness. At 980++ Php, it seemed really reasonable. You get to choose between a starter, main course and a dessert.
To start things, we were served with the PARROT FISH CEVICHE leche de tigre, Peruvian styled. The parrot fish was smooth in texture. The ceviche was somewhat different as the sauce has been spiked with the coconut flavor. Something creamy and interesting.
You could also try out the TOMATO and OREGANO Algario Gaspacho, Baby Squid a la plancha. The soup was served on the cold side and is a mix of different vegetable flavors. The baby squid were firm and cooked perfectly.
For the main course, the JOSPER GRILL WHITE SNAPPER, Manila Clams and tomatoes with chorizo. This was a pretty interesting dish as the fish was smothered with a foam of white wine. It has absorbed the flavor from the fish and makes the dish moist. The clams were cooked in a way that there's a bit of infused wine flavor too.
The CARAMELIZED PINEAPPLE CRUMBLE with star anis and vanilla sauce was the perfect ending. It wasn't too overpowering nor was it too sweet. It was just right. Served warm and just right I wouldn't mind having more of this.
Thank you Chefs for making our visit an amazing one and for creating dishes that make use of sustainable ingredients.
Chef Eric Weigmann, Chef De Cuisine for Sage Bespoke Grill. Chef Gilles Galli, Executive Sous Chef. Chef Paul Lenz, Area Executive Chef for Shangri-La Philippine Properties.
Sustainability is one of the most important aspect of food. Our sources must be respected and treated as if it is our friend and lifeline. You can't just disregard the future for present gains. Remember, we must think about our kids' kids and more generations to come. Thank you very much Makati Shangri-la for joining the Sustainable Food Week. Cheers.

VIKINGS at SM NORTH EDSA: FREE MEAL Every Month

Did you know that VIKINGS will be giving a meal for free once a month for the whole 2016? .... From there, my mouth flew open and wondered if this was true.
On a calm day last January 2016, I visited VIKINGS in SM NORTH.

During that weekday lunch, the place was packing.
It was actually, my first of many visits to SM NORTH's Vikings Branch.
Of course I focused my attention on the carving station of Vikings because to fully get what you paid for, always go for the big guns first in a buffet.
Appetizers were a plenty among with the usual stations you would see in VIKINGS.
One dish that I learned though was that they have a special dish that was recently added. It was VIKING'S version of Taiwanese Adobo Beef. It's like making your own rice topping.
It was also nice for them to give me a birthday cake since it was my birthday the week before.
For the month of JANUARY, VIKINGS had a theme for their free dish. It was ANGUS STEAK. So, all the branches of VIKINGS including NIU gave away steak themed dishes to its customers for free.
You don't really need to worry because they give it in a take out box for you to enjoy on your own free time.
As early as 3pm, people were lining up to get a free dish.
One of the lucky diners that got a free dish.
So how can you get a free meal? Basically, you just need an INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT.

Here are the mechanics:
1) All Vikings Branches will giveaway a special dish* of the month for FREE on February 20, 2016 for the first 100 pax only.
2) Redemption time will be at 3:30 - 4:30. Official line will start at 3:00 PM.
3) To join the food fest, guest must regram/repost the official IG post from @vikingsluxurybuffet on their OWN Instagram account with the complete caption and hashtags ‪#‎VikingsFoodFest‬ ‪#‎EatLikeAViking‬. (Please repost on your Instagram account this particular post)
4) Guest must follow the official Instagram account of Vikings: @vikingsluxurybuffet
5) Present their repost/regram post to the official personnel in charge at his/her preferred store in order to be able to line up.
6) Eligibility to redeem the special dish will be checked upon lining up.
7) Strictly no Instagram post, no redemption.
8) No multiple redemption per store.
For tomorrow, they would be giving out these dishes for free!
Isn't that amazing?

Classics at MURRAY and D'VINE in Serendra BGC

Burgers are made to be messy, juicy and quick. That is what MURRAY and D'VINE gives. Located in Serendra, BGC, This restaurant has been acquired by the Bistro group to add to their long list of brands. One might say that it is a great place for a quick meal but it has more to offer.
MURRAY and D'VINE has a modest selection of appetizers. They introduced flatbreads. Somewhat pizza like but different and could be shared by 2-3 persons. Similar to the ones in Village Tavern.

If that isn't your thing, you could go for a slab of BABY BACK RIBS. Juicy and fall of the bones goodness. I liked the smoky taste.
  Enter the Burger.
The burger is the one thing that can't be messed up. It is perfect for a quick and filling meal. It might be not as glamorous as other dishes but it is the go to sandwich for every meal.
The Cheese and Bacon Burger is simple. Cheddar and bacon placed on topped a meat patty.
Sharing might be a good thing too as they offer Burger Sliders. Just in case you won't be able to finish one whole burger.
And if you can't decide, they offer a sampler platter of sorts. From the slider to the baby back and even some wings.
One burger that must be tried is the JUICY LUCY. A patty packed with swiss cheese and sauteed onions inside. Pretty nice texture and cooked perfectly. I love it how the cheese can't contain itself and it wants to ooze out already.
It may be not too spacious but it does serve decent classic food. A little bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Now, I can't help but wait for the new concepts the BISTRO GROUP is bringing in... Stay tuned for those!

What a surprise. I wasn't expecting it but I received something in the mail. It was samples of ORELL'S BANANA THINS. These babies were made from saba bananas that were locally sourced. Yep, proudly Philippine Made.
When I opened the bottle. The aroma of caramelized banana fry entered my senses. I tried one and it was so good. It doesn't have that oily flavor nor is it overly sweet. Every bite was crunchy and delicious.

For those who are asking, sorry but I won't be able to share my stash with you guys because I can easily finished one bottle in a couple of days.
A 200mg plastic bottle like is priced at 170Php. Just about right if you ask me.
If you are going to order, the minimum number is 24 jars. Delivery takes around 3-5 days within Metro Manila and longer outisde. I suggest you get a hold of them and ask how to do it. It is pretty could and I am proud that it is Filipino Made.
