TSOKOLATERIA in Tagaytay: A Chocolate Heaven

TSOKOLATERIA in TAGAYTAY is a romantic place for chocoholics to enjoy each others company. Located in The Boutique Bed and Breakfast in Tagaytay , Tsokolateria has an amazing view of TAAL LAKE and is close to nature.
Because of the cold weather in Tagaytay, the Happy concept group has made chocolate more accessible and available to the vacationers and foodies alike. By opening Tsokolateria, they gave a new meaning to chocolate.
Drinks are the most popular things to order at TSOKOLATERIA, be it sangrias or different kinds of hot chocolate made from their house blend of tablea.
From their version of BATIROL or local chocolate to something spiked up and with bits of chili, you will get what you wished for.

Flavored chocolate drinks are not unusual but at TSOKOLATERIA, they made it into art. From chocolate mallows to something different.
Shot glasses filled with different flavored chocolate drink makes it a fun experience.
More than just drinks, TSOKOLATERIA has a lot of chocolate infused dishes in its extensive menu. Granted that it might sound weird, the dishes actually worked well with one another. The chocolate flavor might be just hints but it is there to complete the theme.

Small bites and appetizers were great partners for the drinks offered. From those with chocolate dips to cheese with adobo flakes, you can't go wrong with any of them.

For indecisive diners, Tsokolateria offers PANDESAL BRUCHETTA SAMPLER PLATTER. From Fish to cheese and even adobo flakes, you get to try a whole bunch of bites to go with your drinks.

Surprisingly, TSOKOLATERIA also offers solid main dishes. From pasta to rice dishes, you have a variety of awesomeness.
The CARBONARA has white chocolate shavings while the SPICY TUYO has bitter cacao to even out the flavor.
The BLACK RISOTTO dish wasn't bland as other restaurants would have it. This had layers of flavor. The dash of Davao's choco powder and the squid ink went well together. The crunchy squid was just the cherry on top.
For a deadly and mascular dish, the BACON LECHON KAWALI was well cooked. Crunchy and delicious. Made with cacao nibs and partnered with mountain rice, you won't go wrong with this.
What is a dessert place without well, dessert?
Waffles are traditionally desserts but in this instance, they also made them into savory dishes.

Not only are they normal waffles, but the batter were made with hints of chocolate.
If you're a fruit lover, you are in luck. The strawberries are fresh and abundant. Meanwhile, banana also goes well with dark chocolate.
If you must only have a couple of dishes, I would suggest that you go for these two.
The BIBINGKA PANCAK SOUFFLE and the traditional looking CHAMPORADO. The souffle must be eaten as soon it is served. The cold temperature in Tagaytay could take out the fun in it. On the other hand, the CHAMPORADO was just perfect. The fish chips and even chicharon partnered well with the chocolatey sweet taste of the Champorado. This is a definitely a must get.
And to end the meal, more chocolate drinks. Just because.

With the opening of TSOKOLATERIA in TAGAYTAY, foodies are given more dessert options and variety that could spice up their out of town visit. Granted that chocolate dishes might be overly sweet, it is done perfectly and executed well enough to enjoy the meal at TSOKOLATERIA.

PAMANA in TAGAYTAY: The Real Heirloom Restaurant

PAMANA is a must visit restaurant in Tagaytay. There is something about the ambiance and the vibe that makes you go for that nationalistic pride and have home grown dishes in your belly every time you go south of the metro. A trip there would not be complete without FILIPINO FOOD. HENCE, PAMANA!

PAMANA in TAGAYTAY is the epitome of Filipino Dishes. Here, diners are treated to solid Filipino Cuisine with a hint craftsmanship. From the same owners of the famous BARRIO FIESTA, PAMANA seems to be making a name by itself. From the word, PAMANA meaning heritage or inherit, certain dishes here actually came from different members and friends of the family. Even so, Chef Happy Ongpauco-Tiu made all of them pop and jive together and stand on their own.

Near the Rotonda or the famous Tagaytay round about, Pamana has a huge seating capacity and has an impeccable view of TAAL LAKE. The scene from the third floor itself is just breathtaking. The place may get full at times so reservation is a must.
To whet the appetite, we were served certain Filipino delicacies partnered withe cheese and bread to dip. From sampaloc to piyaya and even buto ng pakwan. These are basically childhood classics to pass the time.

An instant hit, the OKOY BITES or small shrimps cooked in a small patty. Dipped in vinegar sauce, each bite would translate to a crunchy sound. Well made.
For foodies that love sour dishes, the NILASING NA MANGGA or drunk mangoes are just incredible. These fermented mangoes were submerged in beer for weeks. Interesting enough, the beer added flavor to the mangoes and made it work. If you like, go for the ones with chili peppers. The flavor profile is just amazing.
Seafood lovers would enjoy the PUSIT IN SQUID INK. Basically calamares but has a squid ink batter. One thing to note too is that the dip is laced with crab fat. So glorious yet deadly. I found myself getting a piece, one after another.
Another "healthy" dish would be the TINUKTOK. The minced coconut meat wrapped in taro leaves works well when cooked with the coconut milk.
The mains though are pretty much deliberately deadly and would definitely make your taste buds jump for joy. I have never knew that Filipino Food could evolve to such that it would be a  joy to eat these dishes over and over again.
The perfect example would be the SEAFOOD PAELLA cooked in ALIGUE or crab fat. The flavors of the sea works well with the addition of the crab fat.

If rice or paella can't be part of your diet, the noodles served in PAMANA is a must! That time around the SIZZLING PANCIT IVATAN was served. The pork adobo flavor was absorbed by the noodles that you would gladly order rice to eat it with. I know it is carbs on carbs but it must be done.
Looking ever so simple, the LECHON MANOK na TINUPIG SA GATA must not be underestimated. Believe it or not, it didn't need sauce as the chicken meat was moist and flavorful. Being tinupig or cooked with coconut milk made the chicken flavor pop out.
This is seriously delicious.
Foodies and daredevils seeing this dish would freakout. One bite in and they will be hooked by the SIZZLING LITID. Litid is basically the sinews or the soft fat like cartilages that connects the muscles and bones. It looks like fat, feels like fat and tastes like fat but believe me it isn't.
As you can see, this glorious dish is made more delicious by adding bone marrow. You would be ordering additional rice at this point and maybe a anti-cholesterol pill.
What is a visit to a Filipino restaurant without Kare-Kare or Crispy Pata? Here in PAMANA, they made the two into one dish just so you get the best part of both worlds. The peanut flavor from the kare-kare and the crispy and crunchy skin from the crispy pata. This is the KARE-KARE CRISPY PATA with CRISPY TADYANG. The kare-kare recipe came from Barrio Fiesta while the Crispy Pata is from the Dad of Happy. She, on the other hand, made the tadyang into crispy flakes. Amazing!
I was pleasantly surprised to see the dessert was just as simple yet mind blowing just like the dishes that were served. Partnered with traditional local hot cocoa, different kakanin or sticky rice desserts were offered. Basically, a chocolate fondue party.

Without a doubt, PAMANA is a must visit Filipino Restaurant whenever one goes to Tagaytay. Traditional Filipino dishes were brought out to capture the hearts and senses of the diners. Even if these were old recipes that were handed down, I could honestly say that the ingenuity of the chef behind the dishes showed the true potential of Filipino Cuisine.

CHELSEA GRAND CAFE: Longest Sunday Brunch in Serendra

$

CHELSEA GRAND CAFE in SERENDRA holds the distinction of having one of the longest Sunday Brunch Buffet in the BGC area. From 10am to 3pm, they serve good morning cuisine that can't be beaten. I have never seen nor heard of any restaurant that serves tasty food 5 hours long.

A long spread of breads, cereals, pancakes, and muffins is the first thing that greets you as you enter.

Once seated, you could pick from a list of pasta dishes and have the kitchen cook it up for you.

The Mac & Cheese was pretty good. Maybe because of the bacon bits. Bacon is love.
You could also ask the wait staff to make an omelet from all the ingredients listed. Better yet, it would be prudent to check out everything and pick them on the spot from their omelette station.

A large number of salad, dips and cold dishes alongside different types of cheese would be perfect for the numerous bread types that they offer.

Another highlight of the buffet spread was the seafood section.

Fresh clams and oysters from Aklan are served on ice beds. They go with a lot of sauces. I suggest you go for a little lemon squeeze and some dill sauce. These oysters though are seriously fresh and delicious.

Another favorite of the spread would be the smoked salmon. Flavorful bites that I can't seem to stop myself from getting more and more.

What is a buffet without a carving and meat section? Here, they offer crispy bacon, sausages and roast beef.

The bacon isn't soggy. Each bite would result to a crunch. The sausages in Chelsea are big, juicy and has a smoke flavor. Yummy.
Accompanied by other side dishes, the roast beef is tender, filled with juices and is perfect with rice or even bread. No need for sauce, as the flavor oozes out with each cut. If you must, roasted veggies are on the side for healthy eaters but why bother when all this meat has the perfect flavor already.

Chelsea can't just leave you on that note. It promises to deliver even until dessert.

Cookies and different pastries are there for the taking. The cupcakes would need special mention because they look wonderfully good.
When going to this buffet, I would suggest that you make space. Don't eat anything before going. SERIOUSLY! No Crackers no snacks!!!!
Aim for that Oyster and Salmon because they are amazing. Don't worry though, they refill the spread pretty fast.
See that egg dish on the left side of the plate? That's truffled eggs. They are so mouthwatering good that you got to stay on point and try to limit yourself because of all the calories. Sadly, I wasn't able to because I couldn't help it. The flavor of the truffle went deliciously well with eggs and the crackers. A side of cheese didn't hurt as well.
CHELSEA GRAND CAFE is genius in offering a SUNDAY BRUNCH BUFFET in the SERENDRA AREA. With all the joggers in mind, this long buffet engagement would definitely refill all the energy lost. From the eggs to the roast beef, you won't go wrong. Even the oysters and the salmon are pretty good that you will definitely go back for seconds or thirds. This is one Sunday Brunch buffet that I won't need to wake up early to.

CAFE CREOLE in RESORTS WORLD MANILA

$

I wouldn't have figured out that CAFE CREOLE in RESORTS WORLD MANILA serves delicious breakfast fare and would actually compliment the different restaurants in the mall. Cafe Creole was created as a memento to one of its former owners. Rightly so, as it has a New Orleans vibe to it.

Located on the 2nd floor of the Newport Mall in Resorts World Manila, CAFE CREOLE has a relaxing feel to it. Pictures on the wall and even the relaxing atmosphere is perfect for a quick meal or a long lunch.
Since it is the only place to get a wood fired oven pizza, don't hesitate to order one as soon as you arrive. The EARTH BREAD (360Php) is the perfect starter. The dough is not too thick nor is it thin. The cheese is evenly spread and believe it or not, the veggies on top works well with the pizza. A simple vinaigrette was used and I liked it.

The Bourbon Street Jambalaya is a Meal in its own. With Spanish and French influence, this dish could be compared to Japanese curry. Perfect with rice and soupy too.
For Shrimp lovers the, the SHRIMP AND CHEESE POLENTA is perfect. Why? Because the shrimps are wrapped with bacon. This is the way to go. That and the fact that cheese works well with bacon and bacon works with everything.
A no fail dish would be the RIB PLATE (670/1290Php). Partnered with corn bread and their version of the perfect rice. The ribs are not overly sweet but are tender and fall of the bone good.

If you must only get one or two dishes, the next two are the ones that I would have to go to.
The WOOD FIRED BACON and EGGS is amazing. This huge bacon slab partnered with potatoes cooked with bacon oil and crisp are just undeniably good.

If you want something heavy, you must go for the BOURBON ST HANGOVER BREAKFAST (580Php). This one is undeniable worth it.
The bacon slab with the sausages is just wow that an order of garlic rice is a must. Plus the potatoes are really cooked well because of the bacon. Don't forget to try the pancakes too. I don't know how to describe them but it's not your ordinary pancakes. The texture is both fluffy and a little crunchy on the outside. The flavor is not the usual. IT is wonderful. I love em!
For dessert, the BEIGNETS are pretty good. Better to eat them once they are served asap. They are fluffy and donut like.
CAFE CREOLE also offers a lot of drinks that you would enjoy just sipping them there. Personally, I liked their SMORES. A lot of marshmallows packed on top of the drink. Not too sweet and just right.
CAFE CREOLE in RESORTS WORLD MANILA gives a different dimension to the cuisine being offered in the mall. Aside from New Orleans styled cooking, the varieties of dishes served here are not like the usual ones that you would see in other restaurants. As such, it is a nice addition to the Newport Mall Family.

BROTZEIT in Shangri-la BGC: Prost!

For someone needing a quick break and a glass of German beer, BROTZEIT in BGC is the best place to go to. Located in the new Shangri-la Hotel block in between the Mind Museum and Bonifacio High Street Central, BROTZEIT opened their third branch just last weekend.

During a media event, the people behind Brotzeit rolled out the big guns and never looked back.

Right from the start, they had sausages and their famous pork knuckles right there for the taking.

The sausages had different texture and flavor that would make them pairing with beers heavenly.

The knuckles were pretty intense. Imagine crunchy skin and moist meat. Take note, these aren't fried. They are cooked in an oven. Bad ass right there.

Aside from the stars of the night, simple but delicious hors d'oeuvres were served too. Wrapped up ham and cheese were placed on top of freshly baked bread. Delicious.

The pub vibe will not be complete without beer. Here at BROTZEIT, GERMAN BEER is their bread and butter.

For someone that is not really into beer, I was delighted and pleased with their flavored ones. Different fruit flavors were used to make the beer more enticing to a none beer drinker like me.

In line with the celebration of the GERMAN BEER PURITY LAW, which limits beer ingredients to water, barley and hops,  they are serving a new seasonal menu to attract beer lovers.
Without a doubt the Pan Seared Sea Bass with weissbier is the choice dish of the night. If you must have just one dish to order, this must be it. The fish was well cooked. The meat was moist and the flavors were there. Even if the hollandaise sauce wasn't that evident, the fish was definitely the focus of the dish.

For pork lovers, the slow roasted pork in dark beer sauce would be your choice. Accompanied by a bacon-cabbage salad, the slow roast gave of a dark malty flavor since it was marinated with beer. The napkin dumpling should not be confused with the Chinese version. This one is traditionally made with stale bread and taste a little bland but it would go well with the pork.
Honestly, I enjoyed the VEAL. The Veal Ragout was served with napkin dumplings and red cabbage. Not overly gamey, the veal was tender and I enjoyed it.

Granted that I'm not a liver eater person, the Roasted Liver in dunkel weissbier was pretty good. The soup sauce was reminisce of beefsteak or bistek. This would go well with garlic or white rice.
To end the meal, BEER BATTERED APPLE SLICES were served. This had a side of vanila ice cream and were covered with cinnamon sugar. I enjoyed the texture of the coating and also the bite that came from the apples. The berries were a nice touch too.
With BROTZEIT opening up in Shangri-la The Fort, patrons are given more choices on where to go and to dine. This would definitely be a nice place to visit for a German food craving or if you are into football or any other sports as they would surely have viewing parties of such. In anycase, I hope you could visit today because they have a 50% off on all food items up until today (April 20, 2016). PROST!

10 Dishes to try at the WORLD STREET FOOD CONGRESS 2016

$

For us foodies, street food is a window through which we could experience and see the real food culture of a place. Thankfully, foodies would no longer need to leave the Philippines to experience internationally acclaimed street food.  From April 20 to 24, 2016, the Philippines would host The World Street Food Congress. 2016.
Aside from the different talks and demos of world-renowned chefs, many are interested in the Food Jamboree. This is where all the fun and food is. It is open to the public and has 25 different food stalls that would cater to all types of cravings. Listed here are the 10 stalls to try at the World Street Food Jamboree.
From Vietnam, Banh Can 38 serves Banh Xeo & Banh Can. Located at stall number 1, two different dishes all on one plate. The yellowish shell like dish is the savoury seafood rice flour pancake. You could say that this is like a crunchy egg tortilla with squid and different seafood in it. Beside it are the hor d'oeuvre like cakes that has shrimps and different greens on them. The peanut sauce on the side gives it a sweet flavor to complete the taste.

The BALI BBQ Ribs from Sunset Warung at Stall 6 gives meat lovers a different look on baby back. These ribs are borderline sweet because of the Indonesian soy sauce used. Accompanied by pickled vegetables, the contrasting flavor would get you hooked.
Seafood lovers would rejoice when they see the Seafood Platter from Keng Eng Kee at Stall 9. Accompanied by 3 distinctly Singaporean Dips,  you would enjoy the soft shelled crabs and deep fried squid.

Because of the chilli crab, black pepper and salted egg yolk sauce, the dish is reminiscent of that first crab bite that you would enjoy in the streets of Singapore.

No food festival will be complete without a Roasted Pig. Pepita’s Kitchen took care of it by serving their SPICY PAELLA LECHON.
Truffled flavored rice was cooked inside the belly of a roasted pig making sure that it would be moist and mouth watering good.

The skin was crunchy and the meat moist. Because of the homemade sambal sauce accompanying the dish, it could become a little spicy so be careful.

For a quick bite, the Har Cheong Kai from HK Street Old Chun Kee at stall 16 could give you what you want. Accompanied by fries, you would think that this fried chicken is like your everyday fast food. One bite in and you would be surprised that the coating of the meat is actually made from shrimps. A certain type of bagoong or shrimp paste was used to marinate the meat. It isn’t that salty compared to local bagoong rather it was a little sweet and yet has that shrimp taste.

At stall 19, Chey Sua’s Carrot Cake was pretty good. With a sweet oyster sauce on the side, the egg mixture took care of its own. Take note though, that this isn’t really made of carrots. Rather, it is a misnomer as the main ingredient of the dish is daikon.

Vegetarian foodies need not worry as Satpal Chaat Bhanda got you covered. At stall 21, they offer the Aloo Chop. This is a potato croquette version from India. Different spices and vegetables were placed on top not only as garnish but to give the dish more flavor and texture. There are hints of masala spice and even a ginger garlic flavor.  Surprisingly, the addition of sweet grapes gave this dish a refreshing experience.

Since it is pretty hot in the open field, you would be glad to know that Churros Loco at stall 23 offers Churros Sundae. Served with vanilla ice cream and topped with sprinkles and nuts, this sweet and cold dish is just perfect for the weather.
Surprisingly good, the Sticky Rice Banana of Nam Bo from Vietnam is a crowd favorite. Located in stall 2, this simple looking dish created a bee line when the Jamboree was opened to the public.
The banana is coated with sticky rice and wrapped with banana leaves while being grilled over wood fire.  A coconut milk based sauce is added generously to give a soothe texture. Roasted sesame seeds were placed on top just to give it a different feel.

The Chocolate Martabak from MAR’tabak ‘Ko’ta ‘BAR’at at stall 5 would be a great alternative for dessert. This Indonesian Chinese styled pancake has a crispy outer layer and  sofy gummy insides. Aside from that, there are a lot of flavors to choose from like Toblerone, marshmallows and green tea.
The World Street Food Jamboree is located at the corner of McKinley Pkwy and 9th Avenue in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Entrance is free and dishes would cost an average of 200-300Php.

April 20-22 4pm to 11pm
April 23 12noon to 11pm
April 24 12noon to 9pm

The first day was a blast. There were some stalls that closed early and there were reports that the food was sold out even before closing time. The lines would reach all the way to a couple of blocks too. The venue was temporarily closed because it reached maximum capacity last night. One tip I would give is that you go early and plan ahead.

MANGO TREE in BGC: Thai Street Food Festival

$

Located in BGC's Bonifacio High Street Central, MANGO TREE is definitely an eye candy inside and out. The interiors transports you to a different place. It's like being in Thailand all over again.

Since the THAI just celebrated the SONGKRAN FESTIVAL, MANGO TREE saw it fit to celebrate it with their version of a THAI STREET FOOD FESTIVAL.
Until May 15, MANGO TREE is dishing out different street food dishes that Bangkok is known for.
Right from the get go, CHEF PRAPUN SAMPUNGPONG, the new executive chef of Mango Tree started with a little demonstration of Thai MANGO SALAD.
With a mix of spices, the mangoes are both sour and sweet. This would really wake up the senses and get your tummy ready for the food ahead.
Just as the kitchen rolled out the different dishes, they served buckets of SINGHA. This particular Thai beer is light and partners well with the dishes.
At first glance, I was dumbfounded with the fries. Once I had a mouthful, I understood. The Tom Yum fries works. The flavor is but a hint.

The next dish was a pleasant surprise.
The Larb Pla Meuk or Spicy Squid salad just had the right kick and bite. It wasn't super hot. Pretty good and actually refreshing.

For another healthy dish, you could try the SALMON SKIN CRISP. Like chicharon, each bite is crunchy with a little bit of meat. Perfect with a cup of rice.
For someone that likes a classic, the CALAMARES version of MANGO TREE is crunchy and goes well with the sweet spicy sauce.
A crowd favorite, the TOM YUM CHICKEN POPPERS is a must. Crunchy exteriors and moist and tender inside.
The Pork Dynamite is familiar yet different from most pepper dishes. A mixture of ground meat is injected into the pepper. It's not spicy but just right.

Thailand is a country known for their noodles. That time, two of their best sellers were presented.
The Goong Phad Wonsen or Stir-fried Glass Noodles looks like your normal pansit. It is actually sweet and the shrimps were cooked with an egg coating. A similar version to Pad Thai, the PHAD SEE IW GAI is a savory dish that had bits of chicken. The pork floss on top gave it a nice bite and the flat noodles work.

Thailand is also known for their dessert. At Mango Tree, they have a lot to offer.

The MUN CHEUM is a deadly dish. It is sweet casava topped with coconut milk.
Right for the weather, they also offer a THAI HALO-HALO. Sweet and refreshing.
One of the best ever things that THAILAND has produced is the STICKY RICE with MANGOES.
Reminiscent of BKK, the sticky rice is authentic and definitely a must try every time you would visit MANGO TREE. The mangoes are a treat and yummy. Alongside the sticky rice, the coconut sauce isn't overwhelming and just right.
The THAI STREET FOOD FESTIVAL in MANGO TREE is up until May 15, 2016. The different dishes serve are quick pick me ups to satisfy your THAI FOOD CRAVINGS.

REMY MARTIN: One Life, Live Them.

I was happy that one of my friends from the KTG, SPANKY ENRIQUEZ was named as one of the brand advocates of an amazing drink, REMY MARTIN. For this, REMY MARTIN had a little launch party done in no less than the JAGUAR showroom in BGC.

Remy Martin did well in choosing their tag line. ONE LIFE/ LIVE THEM.
Even if it is grammatically incorrect, this just shows that we only have once chance and let's make good use of it. Remy Martin wants us to enjoy life to the fullest.
A lot of quick bites were served to the guests of this launch. One of them was this bacon covered wrapped dish. Anything with bacon is love.
As I have never tried Remy Martin, I figured to have it first in a cocktail drink.
I liked the cucumber mixed with the REMY MARTIN as it was both light and refreshing. I tasted the drink and it insinuates summer.
Table side service was also there as a fruit juice mix to add to the Cognac.
As the party went into the night, REMY MARTIN has introduced its brand advocates for Manila. These are influencers that would best promote REMY MARTIN.
REMY MARTIN VSOP is a drink liquor to mix up with different chasers and fruit drinks. This would definitely work well with ginger ale. Definitely a must try, this is just right for that night out. Remember, drink responsibly and don't drive.

TEXAS ROADHOUSE in BGC UPTOWN MALL

When it comes to steak, I would always be one of the first guys in line because I know how delicious it could be. One night, my friends and I were invited to a restaurant specializing in HAND CUT STEAKS. Yes, I was there pretty early.
Just a couple of days back, TEXAS ROADHOUSE opened its doors to the public. Located on the 4th floor of the BGC UPTOWN. this place is known for their hand cut steaks and awesome interiors and ambiance.
Looking like a sports bar and barn house all in one, you could take a seat anywhere in the restaurant and be able to watch that sports event with their huge LCD TVs.

Since it was their VIP NIGHT, we had a preselected menu covering all their best sellers. To start things off, The LEGENDARY FROZEN MARGARITA was served. Loaded with that tequila flavor, you can't go wrong with this. You could even ask the bar to sweeten or add a little bit of salt to suit your tastebuds. Accompanying it would be huge peanuts. At first, it seemed like a display but it wasn't. The peanuts were bigger compared to locally produced ones. Pretty good start if you ask me.
One thing they are also known for are their freshly baked breads. These are baked every 5 minutes and has that soft and sweet taste. It is also accompanied by a honey cinnamon butter. I suggest you ask for a plain butter just to compare the taste. I found myself eating more and more of these babies as they were really good!
The BUFFALO WINGS at TEXAS ROADHOUSE has a well balanced taste. You could choose between a hot or mild wing sauce but I prefer the heat. Accompanied by celery and bleu cheese dip, definitely a classic.
Here, they take their steaks seriously. The 10oz RIBEYE was cooked to my liking. Very flavorful and juicy inside and out. The marbling was there and I enjoyed the cuts of fat on the outside.
The side dish for the steak was the LOADED SWEET POTATO. Baked potato with marshmallow on top. Different and weird but it works. The gooeyness of the mallows goes well with the potato.
To end the meal, the CHEESECAKE was served. The taste was spot on. The texture was different. Rather than being smooth all throughout, it gave these hints of crustyness. A must get!
TEXAS ROADHOUSE is different from other restaurants because of their HAND CUT STEAKS and the warmth of their service. The staff did well and the flavors were there. I won't mind going back here for another taste of that steak. Cheers and Congrats!

GREY GOOSE GASTRONOMIQUE in BLACKBIRD MAKATI

When  I got home one Saturday, I was delighted to see that I received something in the mail. It was a blue envelope that would make my week. An invitation to GREY GOOSE GRASTRONOMIQUE was sent on over and of course I accepted. A night of immense vodka pleasure partnered with delicious dishes created by BLACKBIRD in MAKATI.
Fast forward to that night, and the place was rocking. Blackbird in Makati transformed itself to an all blue event. Blue is a color that gets you in the mood. It is also the colors of GREY GOOSE.

As everyone settled down, cocktails were served. This particular event is a launch for their GREY GOOSE VX. It is their amazing vodka with a little bit of cognac. Interesting flavors and makes everything warm and fuzzy inside.
The liquor in itself is pretty good but it also works with different mixes to make amazing cocktails.
Mixed with cucumber slush or used to make an amazing martini, the GREY GOOSE works really well.
After a few drinks, everyone was ushered to the dining area and we were treated to a gastronomique adventure.

Very moody but having a bluish hue the place was elegant and perfect.
Right from the start, BLACKBIRD made an amazing impression.
The AHI POKE was delicious. Not too heavy and fresh. The flavor was there and the crispy rice underneath made the mouth feel lovely. It reminds me a sushi roll that was deconstructed.
The OCEAN TROUT salad was okay. I'm not really into salads. The fish had a smoky taste. The greens though needed more flavor as the beetroot and the wasabi horseradish cream lacks the push.
On the other hand, the CRUSPY CRAD and salt cod cake was amazing. This deep fried dish was delicious. The pear and celeriac remoulade was perfect with the tarragon anchovy aioli.
The LOBSTER was perfectly done. Butter and bacon roasted lobster. The bacon, and by that I mean the lobster, was delicious. Partnered with the creamy porcini and truffle oil polenta, this dish is a winner.
Around this time, more GREY GOOSE VX were served and everyone was happy. The drink elevated the flavors of the dishes and everything was perfect.
To finish the meal, EARL GREY and orange flowere creme fraiche, strawberry sorbet and citrus crumbs were served. The citrus flavors went together with the earl grey flavor.
From here, PETIT FOURS were also served. Macarons and some chocolate brownies.
GREY GOOSE VX is an exceptional Vodka. A hint of cognac added to the liqour made it an amazing drink. Partnered with different dishes in BLACKBIRD, made it an amazing night. Cheers.

SWEET ECSTASY: NOW OPEN in BGC!

$

Looks familiar right? When I first tried this burger, I was amazed and instantly got hooked. Now, SWEET ECSTASY, the burger place, recently opened up their third branch in BGC.
Located on the 2nd floor of UPTOWN PARADE in BGC and just a stone throw away from PALACE the POOL CLUB and VALKYRIE, SWEET ECSTASY is just like its Katipunan branch. Both have al fresco and a/c dining options. The walls are decorated with clever meme's about burgers and other famous quotes.

Ordering is pretty simple and fast as well. Go to the counter, pick your poison and pay for it. After a few minutes of foodgasmic anticipation, the food will be served to your table.
Start with the ECSTASY FRIES (130Php). These are your ordinary fries that are smothered with ECSTASY SAUCE. Mayonnaise based with a bit of ketchup plus some pickles, the sauce is a perfect match for the fries. During this visit, I felt that the fries were not the same with their Katipunan branch. It seemed that the serving size was smaller compared to previous visits to their other branch.
Onion lovers would rejoice with the ONION RINGS (115Php). These are huge cuts of onions that would be difficult to get it all in one bite.
One of their best sellers would be the SRIRACHA LIME WINGS (245Php). The 6 pieces of golden deep fried wings were coated with a citrusy finish that has a little bit of hotness from the sriracha sauce. Don't forget to use the plastic gloves provided.
The main reason why people flock to SWEET ECSTASY would be the burgers. Mind you these are straight forward goodies. Rather than ordering them from the menu, you could request to have them done ala off-menu. Ask that they be steamed. This way, your burgers would come out with more flavors and the texture would be different.
The meat patty is plain. Not too peppery nor was it salty. It basically gives you that beefy goodness that fast food restaurants are notoriously not known for. Add a bit of cheese or make it into a double and you will definitely enjoy your night!
SWEET ECSTASY is definitely one of the top burger places in the METRO. You can't go wrong with anything that you order. For their BGC Branch, I suggest that you give it a little more time. Since it is still in its infancy and soft opening phase, they can be frazzled when there is a huge crowd but I believe they are getting there. For the mean time, they are open from 5pm to around midnight. This would be perfect for party goers and late night shifters.

MAGNUM INFINITY: CARAMEL and RASPBERRY

A couple of years back, MAGNUM took the ice cream industry by storm. In manila, a pop up store was made and foodies were able to create their own flavored version of a MAGNUM.
A week or so back, MAGNUM organized a tasting of their newest products.
The CHOCOLATE and CARAMEL and the CHOCOLATE and RASPBERRY.
SUB-ZERO test kitchen was the site were the event was held. It was transformed into a pop-up restaurant.
A cocktail of cucumber mixed with a bit of alcohol became the appetizer as we waited for the event to start.
JORDY NAVARRA of TOYO EATERY fame went on stage to explain the different dishes they were about to serve. These were made with chocolate ingredients that were meant to partner well with MAGNUM.
First up was the FLAN. IT had a topping of cauliflower bits and uni flavored foam. This is a savory version of a pudding like dish.
The next dish was a wagyu that has a chocolate sauce. It has a squid ink mash potato on the side as well. Honestly, the chocolate flavor was barely there. From what I tasted, the squid ink was just a coloring agent for the potato. For me, it was all aesthetics.
The main reason why attended was because of MAGNUM. The CHOCOLATE and RASPBERRY was the crowd favorite. The berry flavor was evident in each bite.
For me though, I prefer the CHOCOLATE and CARAMEL. You can never go wrong with it.

The new flavors of MAGNUM ICE CREAM would definitely excite anyone. Just a bite and the crunch from the shell is already a reward. This is perfect for the summer heat.

LUNG HIN 2016: The Best Chinese Restaurant in Ortigas

The first time I ate in LUNG HIN, I told myself that I would be coming back for more. It was an ordinary day but the food and the service was extraordinary. Hence, MARCO POLO ORTIGAS has that drawing power. Fast forward to a couple of months, and I find myself here again and enjoying their brand new dishes.
As I entered the restaurant, I can't help but be amazed of the design and the view. 44 floors is definitely high enough for everyone to enjoy.
Located in MARCO POLO ORTIGAS, Lung Hin is their resident Chinese Restaurant. This time around, my friends and I were situated in one of the dining rooms for added privacy.
Recently, LUNG HIN was awarded the GOLDEN HORSE award.
This means that this is one of those restaurants that offer authentic Chinese Cuisine to its diners outside of China. In true Chinese food culture, the dishes here are served one at a time. One after another, so don't expect them to give all the dishes at one go unless if you request it.
To start things off, the DEEP FRIED CRISPY TOFU with SEAWEED SALAD was served. This salad isn't overly seasoned. NO over dressing here. Basically just a drizzle of the sauce and the flavors are from the ingredients themselves. The crispy seaweed gives it a light salty touch. Crunchy and delicious.
A crowd favorite was the deep friend BEANCURD LEEK ROLLS with Xo Chili Sauce. The shell in itself is made of beancurd. Crispy and definitely spot on. Vegetables with some minced meat are what is inside. Different but distinctly beancurd. Delicious. The homemade xo sauce gives it a bit of spicy bite.
The SPINACH SEAFOOD SOUP is there to calm the tummies. The spinach was definitely there but the taste was not overpoweringly greens. Rather it was refreshing because it helped my pacing. I also enjoyed the bits of seafood in it. From small pieces of shrimps to different fishes.
I was amazed at how well they cooked the CRYSTAL PRAWNS. This stir-fried ball like prawn dish is just mouth-watering good. It wasn't rubbery as one would expect. Rather, it was cooked perfectly. Each bite would bring out that prawn flavor. This must not be shared.
For a classic, the POACHED LIVE GAROUPA with Mushroom was delicious. I would usually not eat a fish dish but I was lured in by the fragrance it was giving out. The meat was pretty moist and tender. Believe it or not, I got a whole spoonful without any bones in it so I was pretty happy.
ANOTHER CROWD FAVORITE was the SPARERIBS with BLACK VINEGAR SAUCE. This deep fried dish isn't overwhelming. The flavor was there but it didn't go overboard. The meat was tender and this made me order rice right there and then. Must order!
The HAM and VEGETABLES in SUPERIOR BROTH was okay. I mean, I'm not really into the vegetable thing but I did go for it because of the excellent superior broth.
Usually, Chinese meals would end with rice to make sure that you get your fill. For this one, the FOOKIAN MISUA was served. Since there was an abundant of flavor from the different dishes, this was steady. It wasn't oily so basically it was perfect to make your tummy full.
There is always room for dessert.
The BUCHI were super duper good. I mean, they aren't oily and isn't overly sweet.
These are the normal version but they also have a masachi black sesame version. I'll go for the traditional one but try the black sesame also.
The heart shaped COCONUT MANGO JELLY was not overly sweet so I loved it. The coconut flavor was there and it worked well with the mango.
After all is said and done, the man of the hour appeared. LUNG HIN has a new Executive Chef. This is KEN LEUNG. He has worked in different establish restaurants and is now heading one of my favorite restaurants. He is for being able to serve delicious dishes that doesn't need to be unhealthy.
LUNG HIN of MARCO POLO MANILA is one of the best Chinese Restaurant that I have eaten in the metro. The view is just amazing, the service there and the food is just perfect.
Worry not, all the best sellers from the previous menu would be still served. Granted that it is a bit pricey to eat here but for me it is worth it. I love everything.

CAFE 1228 in NEW WORLD MAKATI: A Taste of Norway

The last time I visited CAFE 1228 in NEW WORLD MAKATI, I landed an amazing job offer. Here my colleagues and I celebrated our amazing run.  FAST forward to 3 years in the future, I find myself back and reminiscing about the past. Located near major malls in the Ayala area of Makati, NEW WORLD MAKATI HOTEL is the perfect place to conduct business visits with a touch of pleasure.
As I enter CAFE 1228, it seemed that nothing has changed. A very homey touch and an amazing dessert spread right as you enter.
This time around, CAFE 1228 is offering a taste of NORWAY. From May 2 to May 20, diners are treated to culinary creations of CHEF MARKUS DYBWAD. With Michellin starred restaurants under his belt, this Norwegian-born chef knows what he is doing.
A tasting menu was offered to us as these dishes would be part of CAFE 1228's buffet spread as well.
The lunch started off with some appetizers and finger foods celebrating the different salmon dishes that Norway is known for.
Iced Crab Claws were also served with an egg mixture to start. I enjoyed this as everything was prepared perfectly.
GRILLED KING CRAB was the best part of the meal for me. These huge claw part were properly grilled to perfection. Having a nice buttery flavor made it sinful but delicious.
For the chef, his favorite ingredient to cook is the mackarel. This CHARRED MACKAREL with cucumber, ponzu vinaigrette is delicious and smooth.
The HADDOCK with POTATOES was also pretty good.
With a very distinct smoky flavor, the fish must be eaten with the potatoes as it can be salty. If it was up to me, I would have had this with rice. That's how badly I liked it.
To Cleanse the palate, the PARSLEY GRANITA was served. At first I thought it was matcha but since it was served with a lot of greens on the side and in an ice bowl, I figured it must be something else. I took the plunged and after one spoonful, I realized that it wasn't bad at all. This palate cleanser has the parlsey taste but also has a hint of sweetness. Granted that you won't make me eat the whole thing, a spoonful would do to restart your tongue.
As part of their spread, CAFE 1228 also offers traditional desserts from Norway.
This is the KVAEFJORDKAKE. It's a handful to pronounce but basically it's a borderline spongecake with meringue and sweet fillings.
The buffet in itself is also pretty amazing. Granted that it is not as big as other restaurants or hotels but it does show its character by producing quality dishes.
Aside from these foreign dishes, they also have other stations on hand. Like their grill station, Japanese, Filipino and even pasta and noodles.
A TASTE OF NORWAY would run until May 20. The buffet price is at Php 1,999 per person for lunch on weekdays and at Php 2,299 for lunch on weekends. Php 2,399 for dinner daily.

VAGABONDS near Tomas Morato: A Palatable Journey

$

VAGABONDS along Sct Limbaga is a new restaurant destination for the burned out. Recently opened, this restaurant wants the diners to travel the world without leaving their seats. They aim to serve flavors from different places of the world.
A couple of flavored dips are served to start a meal. They could either be a cheesy QUATRO FORMAGGI or an EAST COAST DIP.
Chicken lovers would rejoice as they have a plethora of wing flavors to offer. From something Japanese with the SHOGUN WINGS to something local like the TAGALOG'S BEST. Furthermore, they offer YAO WINGS that has a citrus taste and even a BELGIAN WING version that has a chocolate touch. These are partnered with different sauces. I believe you could skip the sauces all together since these are overwhelming to the senses already.
As a personal choice, I would prefer my burgers patties flattened or at least not too thick. Here at VAGABONDS though, the patties seem like more than an inch high. They have a PB and J version plus a CHORI and a normal CHEESE BURGER. My pick though would be the LAS VEGAS BREAKFAST BURGER. This one has all the breakfast components one would need. The patty is a longganisa flavored one and it has eggs in it.
The pasta selection in VAGABONDS may be a little overwhelming as well. From my standpoint, it seems the kitchen wants to put as many flavors and choices they can out in the market. It may be a good thing but for me, it messes up focus. Maybe VAGABONDS could tone down a bit. Perfect the essentials then start pushing and expanding.
As much as I love a mac and cheese with tons of bacon and also a white sauce pasta with the same topping, I believe this are pretty normal dishes compared to the next two.
Their MEDITERRANEAN PASTA is basically a seafood version with garlic and oil. I enjoyed the light touch and the simple flavors.
A crowd favorite though would be the BLEU CHEESE MAC and CHEESE. Honestly, the BLEU CHEESE isn't overwhelming. It is actually there that it helps the flavors. Maybe they could some bacon bits here as it helps the texture profile.
There are also rice meals that I believe is an essential group of food in any restaurant today.
For the not so adventurous, you could go for their version of a BUTTERMILK Chicken. The chicken is flavorful in itself and is also a Chef's favorite. On the other hand, I was overwhelmed with the other Chicken dish as the flavors were over the top. It seems to me that it was over seasoned plus the flavorful rice didn't help balancing the taste out. JOHN WAYNE'S PORK CHOP is a pretty safe choice.
As for beef lovers, they have a couple of choices to pick from. The Breakfast Version of a steak is great. I mean who would skip steaks for breakfast. More so if it had eggs on top. Granted that I'm not a vegetable lover, the steaks with grilled vegetable skewers would also be great for sharing. This two dishes were partnered with sauces. I don't know if it's just me but I think they should try and make a different version of them or just completely remove them. The dishes are flavorful in itself and I guess having no sauces is pretty much okay. If not, maybe just make them optional. Lastly, the Asian-ish flavors of the last steak dish was pretty good. Although, it was a little bit too salty for me. Since the rice was cooked with soy sauce, I guess they should hold on to putting more salty flavors in.
VAGABONDS has a lot of choices for dessert. For me though, the matcha stands above everything else. Maybe because I'm a matcha or green tea addict that I can't help myself with this little baby. The MATCHA flavor isn't underwhelming and not watered down. One thing to note though, most of the desserts in VAGABONDS is a bit too sweet so don't over do it.
As much as I want to say I love everything, I need to be honest. There is room for improvement. Granted that VAGABONDS has only been open for a month or so, it is normal for them to fix and upgrade their menu. It's a process. Maybe give it a couple of weeks before going. Cheers.

KIWA: Authentic Korean Grill in Solaire Hotel Manila

$

Korean food is one of the things that I look forward to when I go out. Unfortunately, I just don't like the idea of cooking and smelling like food after eating. Enter KIWA!
Kiwa is located on the ground floor of Solaire Hotel and Casino in Pasay. Just a few months old, this Korean Restaurant has definitely raised the standards.
As you enter, you are transported to an amazing place. It is as if you are in Korea enjoying a delicious meal. Everything is authentic. From the utensils to the paper towel and even the wood carvings, these were all imported from Korea. Aside from the main dining area, they also have private rooms perfect for group gatherings.
Each table has their own grill so that everyone would have a chance to cook their food.
Thankfully, the exhaust is really well planned and installed properly. Rather than having them hung from the ceiling, the smoke is vacuumed through a rig from under the table. That is why as you enter the restaurant, there is a small elevation noted on the flooring. Furthermore, you could also ask the staff to cook the meat on a different table near you. Just in case you are as lazy as me.
Believe me, you won't smell a thing once you go out of the restaurant. The food and grill smell, I kid you not, will not stick on you. Definitely the perfect Korean date place.

There were also a lot of drinks to choose from. Imported liquor gives the meal a touch of smoothness.
Starting off with a classic is definitely a must. The JAP CHAE is spot on. Pan fried glass noodles were cooked with beef and assorted vegetables. It had the right bite and sweetness.
A surprise dish of the night was the KIMCHI JEON. This kimchi pancake is crunchy and not overly spicy. The dipping sauce, on the other hand, packs a punch. I was hooked to this dish.
The top choice for starter though would have to be the YUK HOE. This soy based raw beef is mixed with pear and vegetables.

You could say that this is like a tartare but the addition of the PEARS gave it a crunchy texture and sweet flavor. This will work well with a beer or two.
Healthy eaters would love KIWA's SALAD LINE UP.
The CHADOL BAKI has pan fried brisket on top. It's basically a win win. Meat eaters like me would just get those delicious looking brisket. Another must try is the TOMATO YANGSANGCHU.
Seasoned seafood is placed inside a tomato and partnered with greens. I just went straight for the seafood inside.
One dish that Koreans are known for are their BIBIMBAP. KIWA's version is like the fully loaded. Everything that you would think off they placed it there. From colorful healthy ingredients to downright delicious kimchi.
After going through a number of choice starters, these were brought out. Garlic and a tomato based sweet sauce used for dipping. Once you see this, you will be in for a treat.
First up was the YAN NYEOM GALBI.
This is the BEEF SHORT RIBS marinated with special sweet soy sauce. This was the star of the night. The beef was tender and juicy. Each bite would lead to ooh's and ahhs in the crowd.
You could partner it with the vegetables provided to make a roll.
Better yet, just get an order of extra rice and eat it as is so that you could fully taste and appreciate the texture of the short ribs.
One can't live with beef alone so grilled chicken was up next.
The chicken wasn't spicy but was marinated with barbecue flavors.
A perfect alternate to beef just in case you aren't allowed any.
To sum up the night, GRILLED MIXED SEAFOOD was also cooked up.
The texture of the octopus was actually surprising. I was hesitant at first, thinking it might be rubbery. After my first bite, I was wrong. The meat was perfectly cooked and soft. This just shows the freshness of the tentacle.
Believing that I was full, I was about to call it a night when the staff came in with this dish. The SPICY CALAMARI was served with noodles. It had a spicy taste and somewhat kimchi presence.
Dessert was their PATBINGSU. A Korean styled halo halo with red bean paste and other goodies on top. The ice wasn't as fine as I would have liked but we were informed that the ice machine was being flown in within a few weeks.
KIWA is definitely my go to place for a Korean Food Date. Granted that the prices might be a little bit expensive but you would get what you paid for. Honestly, I've been to this restaurant twice in a span of a week. I'm amazed at the level of service from the staff and also the delicious dishes that they bring out. Simple yet done great. Awesome.

CUCINA: MARCO POLO MANILA WEEKEND FIESTA 2+1

For a Friday night, the traffic was normal. Normal in a sense that it was heavy everywhere. I came from the south and got stuck going north. Thankfully, I was headed for a little treat.
MARCO POLO ORTIGAS' CUCINA is having a WEEKEND FIESTA. For Friday, Saturday and Sunday, diners would be treated to a wonderful buffet with a special promotion. Dine with two friends and you get to eat for free. So, it's a 2+1 promo.
As you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by a fresh salad area.

Appetizers are also abundant in the restaurant as different types of cheese and nuts are placed on planks.

A lot of meat cuts were also served in the cheese area.

Sushi rolls and makis were prepared freshly in their Japanese station.

One of the highlights of the dinner would be the fresh seafood station.

MARCO POLO is pushing for sustainable eating and as such, has a lot of seafood in store for the diners.
Freshly cut tuna, different clams, and even crabs were there to provide anything and everything you may want.

You could ask the staff to cook these to your liking.

Aside from that, they have different cuts of fishes.

For the meat lovers, they also have a plethora of skewers.

Another plus point for their buffet would be the PAELLA cooked right there and then.
These are then served in mini pans that are very cute. I love the freshness and the texture of the paella.

What is a buffet without their carving station?

When I visited, the COCHINILLO was served alongside different cuts of meat, including this rib eye! The cochinillo is cooked on site so as long as the buffet line wants it, they could make one available. The Rib Eye was also fantastic. The meat is tender and very juicy.
Dessert is also not a problem as the people behind CUCINA definitely wants the diners to enjoy. Different types of pastries were prepared. I enjoy their version of a chocolate cake as well.
Even if the traffic was hellish that night, I was at ease because of the food from MARCO POLO MANILA. I enjoyed the different stations in the buffet and also the drinks as well.

"The Weekend Fiesta can be enjoyed from Fridays to Sundays at Php 2,300 net for lunch, and Php 2,650 net for dinner. For a limited period only, bring along two friends and enjoy this feast with one free buffet.
Cucina is Marco Polo Ortigas Manila’s all-day dining restaurant and is open daily for lunch from 12:00 NN to 2:30 PM and dinner from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM. Children aged 6 and below get to eat for free while children aged 7 to 12 years old are charged half the price."
